Annotated Bibliography Book Hamermesh, D. S., Nottmeyer, O. K., Nottmeyer, O. K & King, S. (Eds.). (2016). Evidence- based policy making in labor economics: The IZA world of labor guide 2016. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc. https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ras/detail.action?docID=4558314 This book is the second volume of IZA World of Labor entries, extracting the most important aspects of labor economic issues and summarizing them. Containing 110 published articles uniquely displayed to help the reader have a better understanding of labor policies and how to approach them. I chose this book because it gave me insight on how to answer my research question “How does the government impact universal childcare in the United States?” This resource is useful for my project because chapter eight: Education and Human Capital gives a brief explanation on how labor markets affect education. Labor markets have an impactful role on universal childcare. Scholarly Journal Miller, C. D., Gerdes, A., & Bragger, T. (2020). Policy Point--Counterpoint: Could a Universal Childcare Policy Be Implemented to Help Working Families in the U.S.? International Social Science Review, 96(1), 1–10. https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&AuthType=ip,shib&db=a9h&AN=142503553&site=ehost- live&scope=site&custid=s9076023
This article discusses how the lack quality childcare in the United States remains unreliable, unavailable, and unaffordable for families. This has become a major problem causing lower participation rates in mothers causing fathers to be in the labor force more than single mothers of young children. The article is centered around the lack of quality childcare available to families and the policies that have been put in place to help low-income families with the cost. I chose this resource because it provides evidence of how childcare can affect governmental decision making. The article explained the different acts put in place to support universal childcare and everyone’s participation in it. Magazine Waxman, O. B. (2021). The U.S. Almost Had Universal Childcare 50 Years Ago. The Same Attacks Might Kill It Today. https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&AuthType=ip,shib&db=mat&AN=154040445&site=ehost- live&scope=site&custid=s9076023 Time.com Magazine article the author explains how President Bidens ‘Build Back Better” Act proposes the ‘largest investment in childcare in the nation’s history.” (The White House) The new laws would include universal and free prekindergarten and expanded child tax credits, seeking no more than 7 percent of families incomes. This landmark bill resembles when President Nixon voted a landmark bill, the Comprehensive Child Development Act 50 years ago. This Act would have federally funded public childcare centers across the U.S. The reason I chose this source was because it supports my research question “How does the government impact universal childcare in the United States? “It provides another piece of evidence in supporting universal childcare. Linskey, A. (2022, Dec 21). U.S. News: White House Aims to Boost Workforce --- Economic priorities would include a new push for child-care and eldercare. https://www.proquest.com/newspapers/u-s-news-white-house-aims-boost-workforce/docview/ 2756026208/se-2 The newspaper article discusses how White House economic officials plan to push for new policies aimed at luring Americans back to work, including improving childcare and senior benefits. Giving that republicans will gain control of the House of Representatives next year making it difficult for bills to get passed. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Brain Deese, the director of the White House’s National Economic Council discusses the possible areas for improvement given congressional approval. I chose this resource because it fits well with my magazine source I can use as evidence to support my research claim.
