What, if any, keywords or phrases did you add to your search menu based on the item records or content of the books? I used plain text and searched for universal childcare. I was surprised with the search result because the website gave me 2242 book results. I was surprised by the results because I didn’t think I would find many results with the generic term search. Using the term, I was able to look through the results and choose the eBooks that will benefit my course project. 3. List the titles of three books that appeared to meet your research needs 1. The state of Social Protection in ASEAN at the Dawn of Integration 2. Work-Family Challenges for Low-Income Parents and Their Children 3. Evidence- Based Policy Making in Labor Economics: The IZA World of Labor Guide 2016 4. What book did you select and why? I selected the book Evidence- Based Policy Making in Labor Economics: The IZA World of Labor Guide 2016. Research Question: How does the government impact universal childcare in the United States? These are the following paraphrases and points from the book that helped me answer this question. There is a great interest in universal early education when it comes to promoting child development and supporting maternal employment. Findings from the small-scale early education intervention for low-income children in the US have influenced public discussion. These findings may be limited for policymakers considering a larger scale. The best insight into the potential impacts of universal early education comes from this analysis and the programs created within themselves. This growing research suggests that universal early education could benefit both children and families, allowing quality to matter (Elizabeth U. Cascio, 2016).
Part II: Research Journal – Scholarly Journal Articles 1. What database did you use to locate a scholarly journal article? I went through the Rasmussen library by accessing it by clicking on the content and library tool. I clicked on the A-Z databases and chose Academic search Complete via EBSCO. Basic Search: EBSCOhost 2. What search terms did you use and how did you adjust your strategy based on results? (include number of results for each search). What, if any, keywords or phrases did you add to your search menu based on the item records or content of the articles? When I first searched, I used plain words: “universal childcare” and didn’t get any results. I used the keywords “universal childcare in the United States” and 131 articles came up. When I did an advanced search choosing my preferred publication type which was an academic Journal, I got the same search results as in the beginning. Using the keyword “United States” in within my search helped me be able to find the academic journals needed to support my research question. 3. List the titles of three articles that appeared to meet your research needs. Policy Point- Counterpoint: Could a Universal Childcare Policy Be Implemented to Help Working Families in the U.S.? Universal Childcare: It’s Time. Building a Better Childcare System. 4. Which article did you select and why?
The article I selected was the Policy Point- Counterpoint: Could a Universal Childcare Policy Be Implemented to Help Working Families in the U.S.? I chose this journal article because it gave me a deeper insight on the benefits universal childcare can have on families in the labor source. This Academic Journals provides me with credible research and statics I can use to solve my research question. 5. Briefly summarize the article and include a reference citation for the article you chose below. Many families struggle to maintain employment while caring for their children. Married couples and single fathers are more likely to be in the labor force than single mothers of young children. The lack of quality childcare available to families is one reason for lower participation rates from mothers. Due to organized labor global markets were used as a threat causing families to have no other choice but to become dual income earners. Throughout the centuries many childcare arrangements were put in place for working families. Certain public funds became available to parents receiving government assistance. Childcare in the United States remains unreliable, unavailable, and unaffordable for parents who work irregular hours. Family childcare centers have drastically decreased in numbers due to the number of children licensed to hold. Per the article, the department of education feels affordable childcare shouldn’t exceed 7 percent of a family’s income. Married couples cost of childcare should exceed 70 `percent of their income. Workers who can’t find affordable, reliable childcare struggle to enter or are forced into the labor market. Other countries have policies like universal childcare such as family leave are available.

Affordable and available quality childcare is a major problem in the Unites States. Many programs have been put in place to help low-income families with the cost. Many of these programs help with food costs and finical assistance. The Lanham Act was established during the 1940s in World War Two as an emergency measure. This act allowed mothers to participate in the opportunity to collaborate. This program lasted six years costing the federal government over $26 million dollars to fund, requiring additional government investment. This policy wouldn’t benefit everyone equally because individuals without any children wouldn’t benefit from the childcare policy, except for those who are provided job opportunities in the childcare industry. Although taxes would fund a n universal childcare policy, it would be mandatory for all citizens to fund the program regardless of their participation. Reference Miller, C. D., Gerdes, A., & Bragger, T. (2020). Policy Point--Counterpoint: Could a Universal Childcare Policy Be Implemented to Help Working Families in the U.S.? International Social Science Review, 96(1), 1–10. 6. Evaluate the material selected. Is the material balanced, or does it reflect a specific point of view? I found this article to be balanced. This article answered my research question “How does the government impact universal childcare in the United States?” The article explained the different acts put in place to support universal childcare and everyone’s participation in it. I believe the article was balanced because it gave the reader a perspective of the government’s support of universal childcare.
7. Paraphrase a selection from the article that helps to answer one of your research questions utilizing an in-text citation. List the question(s) being addressed following the paraphrase. These are the following paraphrases and points from the book that helped me answer this question. Research Question: How does the government impact universal childcare in the United States? Over half of the American population lives in a “childcare desert”, a census tract with over fifty children under the age of five where there are no childcare facilities (Miller, C.D, 2020).
