The relationship between Pat Solitano and Tiffany Maxwell in “Silver Linings Playbook”

analysis, seeking to maximize rewards and minimize costs. In the film, both characters struggle from mental health issues and the loss of their spouses. Pat had just been released from a mental health institution following a bipolar diagnosis and assaulting the man that his wife had an affair with, while Tiffany, a young widow, had recently been fired from her job due to engaging in promiscuous behavior at the workplace. Reeling from loss, the two aim to restore stability and meaning to their lives in different ways. Pat is determined to regain contact with his estranged wife, despite a restraining order against him. Meanwhile, Tiffany aspires to participate in a local dance competition but does not have a dance partner to enter with. Pat and Tiffany bond over their shared experiences and desire for emotional support and validation.
Their relationship begins as a transactional exchange. Initially, Pat's primary motivation for engaging with Tiffany is to gain access to information about his estranged wife, whom he is determined to contact via letter. In return for giving Pat’s letter to his wife, Tiffany asks Pat to participate in the dance competition with her. This exchange highlights a concept of social exchange, where individuals enter relationships with the expectation of receiving rewards or benefits in return for their investments.
