2-Minute Journal 4.1 During the Culture Sort Activity, what did you notice about your mental process to connect images with cultures? noticed that I was better at making connections between cultures when I was able to associate them with something familiar. I noticed that I was able to make stronger connections between cultures when I took the time to consider their shared values. When I was doing the culture sort activity, I noticed that the hearing aid represents someone who was born deaf or lost their hearing, and deaf culture represents people who cannot hear, so I connected those two concepts. Additionally, sushi is part of Japanese culture, so I knew there was a connection between the two. 2-Minute Journal 4.2 Write 3-6 sentences as you reflect on each of the following prompts: How did you decide your answer for the poll: “Using Hidalgo’s levels of culture, which level do you think is the most important level for others to understand your own culture?” I believe behavioral is the most important level of culture to understand because it captures how individuals interact with each other. This level of culture is important because it is the foundation for all other levels and is essential to understand how people communicate, work, and live together. Review the examples listed with the different levels of culture: Concrete, Behavioral and Symbolic. When you talk with someone from a different culture, explain which level of culture you most use to understand them? I use Symbolic level the most to understand someone from a different culture. This level allows us to recognize and interpret nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, which can give us a better understanding of the person's feelings and intentions. Additionally, Symbolic level allows us to interpret symbols and metaphors, which can help us better understand the other person's culture and values. How is your attempt to understand other’s culture consistent or inconsistent with how you want to be viewed and understood? It is important to be respectful of others' customs and traditions, while still maintaining your own identity. Taking time to understand and learn about different cultures can help to foster understanding and empathy. It is also important to be aware of your biases and preconceived notions when trying to understand another culture.
