Bryan Watson COMD 362: Communication and Organizational Culture Professor Alex Rister April 9, 2023 Mini Organizational Ethnography Paper: Topic & Outline The Organization I have chosen to write about is DME Delivers. A print production based marketing company where I myself work. The Approach I have chosen is a classical approach. I'll be making the analysis using The Machine Metaphor under Henri Fayol's Theory of Classical Management model. I have decided to use this model and approach because it seems to be the best representation of the current organizational structure and communication style at DME Delivers. I also belive the production focus of the organization makes it a good fit for the mechanical metaphor type processes as in that proposed by Henri Fayol. Fayol's principles of management can be addressed and disseminated in four parts, “The Principles of Organizational Structure , Organizational Power , Organizational Reward, and Organizational Attitude, as seen in our text Miller (2015) Following along this line of analysis I found the elements from Fayol’s Principles of Organizational Structure as presented in the text Miller (2015), are all present in the organization I have chosen in my analysis. The elements of Fayol’s Principles of Organizational Structure are as follows
Scalar Chain Vertical hierarchy - vertical communication flow Unity Of Command Each departments employees have a single supervisor Division of Labor Employees are assigned to singular specialized tasks Order There are appointed places for employees and their task within the organization Span of Control Managerial influence is limited to their department This model presented by Fayol can be applied to my chosen organization not just in the structural organization but the power, reward and attitude aspects conceptualized in this model can be adeptly applied to the functioning organizational culture at DME Delivers. However I feel it necessary to state that this is not an assertion as to the effectiveness of the company's organizational structure under this model but an observational study of the model at work in the field.
