Timothy Sollenberger M4A2 - Self Reflection 1 November 16, 2023
The exploration and study of cultures and their impacts on business communications has been eye-opening for me. Reviewing the materials covered and the assignments completed I have taken the most from the discussion posts. Notably the sharing of diverse perspectives that individuals have had. One noted example that this material made me consider was the fact I have two foreign nationals working in my current department. I felt as though we as a group had taken steps to assist in their transition to a new country and assimilation into our department but the nature of how they receive direction and their expectation for how work assignments are communicated was not something I spent much time on. The readings and the week two discussion and required research into Ethnorelativism were quite eye-opening. Based on this thought exercise from the course and sharing of that I set up and had a one-on-one discussion with the individual to talk about cultural differences and how I could help them get the most out of their job day to day. The above example is a direct reflection of how coursework has impacted my day-to-day so far. The text and taking the time to examine several different countries is something that will have an impact on me moving forward. Globalization of work and hiring from foreign countries are things I see in my company relatively often. Until reading some of the specifics the nature of being culturally competent had not fully hit home with me. Take the example from week four talk about not receiving any questions at the conclusion of a presentation. This would have been previously lost on me. When traveling abroad or even to different regions of this country I will take the time to at least read and study the high-level items that will be important to working and living there. I look forward to working on the group projects and getting more in-depth sharing of my classmates, reading further on several countries, and discussing the videos and readings provided.
