MUS 294: Week 2 Worksheet Name Ann Drye Signature Part I: Vocal Style, Lyrics, and Culture Compare the vocal styles of Patti Page and Muddy Waters.  Patti page is more clam and soft and sweet and muddy waters is very bluesy and upbeat and you can hear people in the background. What is Patti Page singing about? Patti page was singing about dancing with her loved one when an old friend come up and starts dancing with him and steals him away from her. What is Muddy Waters singing about? Muddy Water is singing about when he was young is mom told him he was gonna be famous but now he is 21 and grown and hes a childish man. How do the vocal styles and the lyrical content reflect the cultures from which these two songs emerged? Pattis song is more proper and waltzsy which makes it seem like she grew up going to cotillions and was maybe a debutante where she would have learned to waltz. Muddy waters’ songs were more upbeat and exciting which is what the bluesy music was at that time. Part II: Looking For Patterns in the Music What pattern do you hear in the lyrics of B. B. King’s 3 o’clock Blues? In 3 o clock blues king using oh a lot and repeats in most verses and repeats himself in the bridge What pattern do you hear in the lyrics of Patti Page’s Tennessee Waltz? Patti page repeats the whole song Patti Page repeats the lyrics to her song twice There is a story in both of these songs; however, the stories are communicated in considerably different ways. What are these differences?
Patti is very direct with the story she is telling but King is not he talks about the story is a singing way instead of a story way Part III: Patterns and Influence What pattern do you hear in the lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers Blue Yodel #1? He repeats t for multiple times at the beginning and then repeats his yodel throughout the song Would you classify this song as a country and western song or a blues song? Write a paragraph in support of your answer. I would classify this song as a country and western song. I think it is country and western because yodeling is a big staple in that kind of music now and it definitely used to be even more. He is also talking about a women who he loved but left him and his mom and the Lord and a gun. He also brings up Georgia which is very southern and country. Part IV: Economics and Music Whether we like it or not the economic factors had a considerable role in shaping the development of rock and roll and popular music, more generally. What sorts of economic factors were at play prior to 1950 and how did they shape the kinds of music that were created and distributed in the mainstream? Hint: What was the base commodity in the music industry at that time? Post-World War II, the success of the Rock and Pop music industry became contingent on economic conditions, limited radio stations, and specific establishments, as highlighted by Friedlander, such as Rosenburg's status. Objectivity and bias also influenced the identification of music labels and sponsors.
What kinds of economic factors are at play in the world of popular music today? How do they shape the kinds of music that are created and distributed in the mainstream? Hint: What do you think is the base commodity in the music industry today? Themes, fan base, music labels, sponsorship, and the entertainment industry driving airplay have collectively molded the music landscape. Artists aim to connect with specific fan bases and cater to public preferences and lifestyles, influencing the music they create.
