2-2 Activity: Technology and Event Introduction
How social media affects today’s society
Many of us today are huge users of technology compared those from previous generations. The fact that so many of us have become such heavy user of technology is a huge concern. Technology can affect our work, life, and interaction in a good or a bad way (Young et al., 2019). Using technology too much can negatively impact a person ability to have an emotional connection with others. It also lowers the comprehension of the individual’s environment and communication. On the other hand, the use of technology can assist with gathering useful information and can help build digital communities with like-minded people.
In this essay, we will look at how the social media aspect of technology has impacted society. This will be looked at through all four of the general education lenses. History Lens
Technology has evolved based off what society has needed. Social media has changed how people communicate and interact (Au-Yong-Oliveira et al., 2018). In today’s age, we rely on
social media to do basic tasks, which has caused a limit on how we see society. However, things such as social media is being used to reestablish with our past by focusing on things like fashion,
tools, and culture. An example of this was when some college students used Twitter to find out about their history and how it impacted current society (Au-Yong-Oliveira et al., 2018). Natural and Applied Sciences Lens
Natural and applied sciences is used to understand different global curiosities which aids us into a getting a better understanding of how we fit in this world (Middaugh et al., 2017). Due to being able to access different ways of communication and information easily, we can share our
findings about the natural world on a global scale. Computer scientists can build applications that
monitor things like diseases in real-time and release that info publicly (Sargent & Ahmed, 2017).
Social Sciences Lens
Because of how technology has evolved, we are able to share information and communicate with each other about our cultures, traditions, and society from different areas (Middaugh et al., 2017). Having so much information available to us has allowed people to be more informed about different cultural and gender practices and issues. A good example of this was when social media was used to get people t0 participate in the "Black Lives Matter" and "MeToo" events. These events helped shed light on some major concerns within the community (Sargent & Ahmed, 2017). Humanities Lens
Technology permits people to look at their lives and the lives of their loved ones allows them to copy the best parts of their lives, but it also allows individuals to always improve their beliefs and witness new experiences. An example of this is with the platform TikTok. That platform has been used to show the light on many cultural issues, dances, and health issues targeting certain groups of people (Sargent & Ahmed, 2017). Teens have welcomed the platform to share their experiences with others. This allows them to expand their views beyond what they are around. Being able to access information permits people to continuously deepen their comprehension of the issues that are impacting society and other individuals from different ethnic backgrounds (Barzilai & Chinn, 2020). A good example of this is when social media platforms like Facebook make it simple to post and create real-time learning material on pandemics, catastrophe, and social in-justices issues, and getting tools passed the impacted areas.
