Section Two
: Audience and Purpose Extension Questions For the questions in the next section, examine how text elements such as word choice, tone, and supporting details are affected by audience and purpose. We asked ChatGPT
(a generative AI writing tool) to rewrite the CBC article as an email to Cortez’s parents.
This was the prompt that was used to generate the email: “
Rewrite this article as an email from the author to her parents based on the same topic”
Read the following email and compare it to the CBC article by directly answering the questions (#4-7) below the email. Subject: My Journey in Pursuing Journalism
Dear Mom and Dad,
I hope this email finds you both in good health and high spirits. There's something that has been
weighing heavily on my heart, and I felt it was essential to share it with both of you: my career dilemma. I know we've discussed this before, but I need your insight and support now more than ever.
I vividly recall the workshop I attended on print journalism, where we had the opportunity to practice writing news and feature articles. That experience left a lasting impact on me and solidified my desire to become a journalist. I became so engrossed in it that I would ask Dad to
turn on the television for the morning news, often risking being late for school, much to his frustration.
However, I faced a hurdle along the way - money. When I approached you both after the workshop, expressing my eagerness to pursue journalism, you shared your concerns about the financial security it may offer. You mentioned that unless I became a news anchor (which you doubted due to my appearance, but I beg to differ), a career in journalism might not provide the stability we all hope for. I understand your worries and the reasons behind them. You have always encouraged me to follow more traditional white-collar professions such as becoming a doctor, engineer, or lawyer. These professions were not within your reach when you were young, given the financial constraints you faced. Lately, I must admit, the allure of these more conventional careers has tempted me as well.
In this uncertain time, I turn to both of you, my pillars of strength and guidance. Should I prioritize financial stability and consider a career in law, even if it means deviating from my true passion? Your wisdom and perspective mean the world to me, and I trust that together, we can navigate through this challenging crossroad to find a path that aligns with both my aspirations and the need for stability.
Thank you for always being there for me and believing in my dreams. I will keep you updated on
my progress and any new developments in this exciting journey.
With love, Kyla

4. What is the NEW purpose of this email
? State a clear purpose for this email, which
is no longer a published article written for the public (Think: Why might she be writing to her parents; review examples of purpose in Weeks 2 & 3).
(1 point)
Asking for advice from parents to rethink about her choice of career.
5. What supporting details and examples are different in this email compared to the original published article? Provide an example of what has changed and why you think that change was made based on the new audience (her parents) in order to receive full points. (

Motivation, personal issue and due to lack of financial status it makes almost impossible to pursue career in white collar jobs as she said” I understand your worries and reason behind them”.
6. Have the tone and diction (word choices) changed in this email?
Pick a specific example of a noticeable change and explain why it is different from the published article to receive full points. (2 points)
s Yes, tone shows she become motivated and emotional in front of her parents, example ' which you doubted me due to my appearance, but I beg to differ'.
7. If you were to write a letter to your family members or close friends, would it be
written in the same way as this email? Why or why not?
Provide a specific example to support your response to receive full points. (
Think: is the language, word choice, structure, tone. and style the same as an email you would write to a close family member or friend?)
(
2 points
)
Yes, definitely I will write a letter in this way because of the body structure made by the author to convince her parents as well as the authorities given by her to the parent show how much she respects her parents is unimaginable. Such as in last she wrote that her parents are important pillars of her strength and guidance
