Strengths
No matter who you are or what you and the training and experience you have will always
lead you to strengths and weaknesses. After reviewing the interpersonal cluster in SHRM, I found that Communications and Global mindset would be strengths for me. Communications is defined as “The KSAOs needed to effectively craft and deliver concise and informative communications, to listen to and address the concerns of others, and to transfer and translate information from one level or unit of the organization to another” (SHRM BoCK) As a police officer who encounters thousands of different people and all in different situations and crisis communication is the first step to helping all of them. Quickly and effectively delivering information and resources to the individual to de-escalate a situation and/or medically assist them during high stress. Keeping things simple even when times can be confusing and conflicting. Global mindset falls into this same idea. This is defined as “The KSAOs needed to value and consider the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties, to interact with others in a global context, and to promote a diverse and inclusive workplace” (SHRM BoCK) I work with a wide range of cultures both internally and externally with the department. Adapting and utilizing different approaches and resources to meet the needs of the specific individual. Weaknesses
I would say a weakness within the interpersonal cluster would be relationship management. The SHRM defines this as “The KSAOs needed to create and maintain a network of professional contacts within and outside of the organization, to build and maintain
relationships, to work as an effective member of a team, and to manage conflict while supporting
the organization.” (SHRM BoCK) I find myself looking for alternatives to better myself with co-
workers and other members of the organization. But I find myself lacking in areas outside of the department. Such as dispatchers, EMTs, Firefighters and other entities that I encounter day-to-
day who make my job a success and easier if on the same page. We all have the same end goal and mission to success. Including them on the team and investing in their mission as well will help me succeed in my mission too. Strategies Moving forward I will reach out to professionals and others who are currently performing
this work and ask for guidance on how I can be of assistance to them and what they can do to be of assistance to me, so we both can be more efficient and successful. While also suggest introducing cross-training or informational meetings with all departments to help brainstorm new
ideas or ways to make the job more effective when all parties are on scene and working under stress. Create a plan rather than improvise.
