Topic 4 DQ 2
How can educators creatively help students retain academic vocabulary words? Provide three ideas and your rationale for why they would be effective.
Educators can employ creative strategies to enhance students' retention of academic vocabulary
words. One effective approach is to encourage the exploration of non-examples for vocabulary words, prompting students to not only understand what a word looks like but also what it does not resemble. This engages students in playful competitions to generate creative non-examples,
reinforcing their understanding and building specific connections between words. The use of online vocabulary tools like Visual Thesaurus and Wordle provides visual representations of word relationships, fostering increased engagement and comprehension. Integrating these tools
allow students to see related and unrelated words as opportunities for meaningful play (Rolland, 2016). Lastly, incorporating drawing activities for guessed meanings of unknown words and non-words, based on prefixes and suffixes, combines creativity with conceptual understanding, making the vocabulary learning experience enjoyable and effective.
