How do I implement language and literacy development? For the purposes of translanguaging (and as an emerging Spanish speaker myself), I allow students to speak amongst themselves in any language they want, to read a texts in their native language provided they feel more comfortable reading in that language than in English, to write notes in any language they want provided they are typed so I can just use Google Translate to see the basics of what they are writing (I have had students submit notes in Spanish, Chinese, German, and Klingon – LOL). Only their final essay, product, or presentation has to be in English. As a language arts teacher, I use many of the strategies mentioned in the Seven Strategies article. One thing I am trying to go back to (I did it a lot when I was a new teacher, but want to go back to it more now) is K-W-L charts. I have stolen one from a colleague, and have slightly modified it for my own purposes. I will use it next year with The Curcible . I use Guiding Questions for Discussion to guide students to important ideas or events, but I supplement it with a basic K-W-L chart (here used with Act II of The Crucible, but I will likely continue using it on other texts). Students’ answers and notes can be in any language but what they do for their final share must be in English. Although many of the Guiding Questions for Discussion have an absolute correct answer, many of the Guiding Questions for Discussion ask open questions with no single correct answer. Students are asked to make predictions, make connections between students’ culture and the culture in the text, try to understand or think about what motivates characters, etc. This gives students quality talking points, fosters deeper connections to the text, and allows for literacy and dialogue that allows for multiple perspectives and understandings. My goal here is for students to discuss their answers and the text before submitting a final product.
