CONSEQUENCES OF VULGAR MUSIC 2 The Harmful Consequences of Vulgar Music and Music Videos on Younger Generations Music is an integral part of our life, serving as a means of expression, relaxation, and entertainment. Do you ever consider how your musical tastes could influence your mood and actions? Music significantly impacts our behaviors and emotions, which is why we should be careful about the kind of music we listen to. There is a growing concern that younger generations are being negatively impacted by vulgar music and music videos, resulting in a decline of moral and ethical standards. Excessive listening to vulgar music and music videos hurts younger generations by making them desensitized to offensive language and sexual content, which is leading to a decline in moral standards. As a music enthusiast and scholar, I have found evidence that repeated exposure to explicit lyrics and music videos lowers young people's moral standards. At this stage of their lives, young people can be easily affected and influenced by the media material they consume because they are still developing their attitudes, beliefs, and values. For instance, vulgar music and music videos that encourage violence and offensive behavior, and inappropriate sexual content can adversely impact their behaviors and attitudes in a manner that does not promote healthy social development. Parents and kids alike should be careful about the media they consume and how it impacts them over time. Parents should be aware of the media consumed by their children, and take essential steps to ensure that they limit their children’s and adolescents’ exposure to explicit and inappropriate music lyrics and sexual content. Excessive consumption of offensive music and music videos can be harmful to the younger generations as it can make them less sensitive to inappropriate sexual content and offensive language. The more these generations are exposed to this vulgar content, the more susceptible they become to perceiving it as normal and acceptable behavior. This perception
CONSEQUENCES OF VULGAR MUSIC 3 makes it easy for the youth to emulate the behavior they observe from the media. Recent research has indicated that young people who are exposed to violent music lyrics and video content are more likely to participate in violent activities (Hogan & Bar-on U, 2020). This behavior results from their perspective of normalizing the violent behavior as socially acceptable. Parents should communicate with their children on the dangers of particular content in music and music videos. These conversations will help them develop critical thinking skills that will help them carefully consider the media they consume and the music they listen to. People may be influenced by music in a variety of ways. Nevertheless, not all music is made equally. The sexual and abusive language in vulgar music and movies may harm adolescent listeners' attitudes and conduct. Excessive exposure to this kind of material might cause people to become less moral. According to a study by the University of Central Florida, popular music lyrics often include allusions to drugs, alcohol, and sexual themes (University of Central Florida, 2017). Since kids are still forming their moral compass, these topics might be detrimental to younger listeners. They may come to embrace and normalize vulgar stuff as a part of regular life due to exposure to it. In addition, the sexualization of female characters in music videos reinforces gender norms and objectifies females. This may result in objectification becoming commonplace and societal acceptance of gender inequity. The issue of children being exposed to unacceptable amounts of obscene media is not recent. The selection of offensive songs was much smaller in the past. Nevertheless, as the internet has grown in popularity, music has become more accessible, making it simpler to listen to and consume offensive material. Digital music services like YouTube, Spotify, and SoundCloud have helped spread offensive songs and videos. The proliferation of such sites has made it simpler for musicians to reach a large audience with their work, bypassing the role of
