The Harmful Consequences of Vulgar Music and Music Videos on Younger Generations
Music is an integral part of our life, serving as a means of expression, relaxation, and
entertainment. Do you ever consider how your musical tastes could influence your mood and
actions? Music significantly impacts our behaviors and emotions, which is why we should be
careful about the kind of music we listen to. There is a growing concern that younger generations
are being negatively impacted by vulgar music and music videos, resulting in a decline of moral
and ethical standards. Excessive listening to vulgar music and music videos hurts younger
generations by making them desensitized to offensive language and sexual content, which is
leading to a decline in moral standards.
As a music enthusiast and scholar, I have found evidence that repeated exposure to
explicit lyrics and music videos lowers young people's moral standards. At this stage of their
lives, young people can be easily affected and influenced by the media material they consume
because they are still developing their attitudes, beliefs, and values. For instance, vulgar music
and music videos that encourage violence and offensive behavior, and inappropriate sexual
content can adversely impact their behaviors and attitudes in a manner that does not promote
healthy social development. Parents and kids alike should be careful about the media they
consume and how it impacts them over time. Parents should be aware of the media consumed by
their children, and take essential steps to ensure that they limit their children’s and adolescents’
exposure to explicit and inappropriate music lyrics and sexual content.
Excessive consumption of offensive music and music videos can be harmful to the
younger generations as it can make them less sensitive to inappropriate sexual content and
offensive language. The more these generations are exposed to this vulgar content, the more
susceptible they become to perceiving it as normal and acceptable behavior. This perception

makes it easy for the youth to emulate the behavior they observe from the media. Recent
research has indicated that young people who are exposed to violent music lyrics and video
content are more likely to participate in violent activities (Hogan & Bar-on U, 2020). This
behavior results from their perspective of normalizing the violent behavior as socially
acceptable. Parents should communicate with their children on the dangers of particular content
in music and music videos. These conversations will help them develop critical thinking skills
that will help them carefully consider the media they consume and the music they listen to.
People may be influenced by music in a variety of ways. Nevertheless, not all music is
made equally. The sexual and abusive language in vulgar music and movies may harm
adolescent listeners' attitudes and conduct. Excessive exposure to this kind of material might
cause people to become less moral. According to a study by the University of Central Florida,
popular music lyrics often include allusions to drugs, alcohol, and sexual themes (University of
Central Florida, 2017). Since kids are still forming their moral compass, these topics might be
detrimental to younger listeners. They may come to embrace and normalize vulgar stuff as a part
of regular life due to exposure to it. In addition, the sexualization of female characters in music
videos reinforces gender norms and objectifies females. This may result in objectification
becoming commonplace and societal acceptance of gender inequity.
The issue of children being exposed to unacceptable amounts of obscene media is not
recent. The selection of offensive songs was much smaller in the past. Nevertheless, as the
internet has grown in popularity, music has become more accessible, making it simpler to listen
to and consume offensive material. Digital music services like YouTube, Spotify, and
SoundCloud have helped spread offensive songs and videos. The proliferation of such sites has
made it simpler for musicians to reach a large audience with their work, bypassing the role of

gatekeepers like record companies. Many excellent musicians have been given a chance to shine
because of this, but there has also been a rise in crude music that encourages foul language and
sexual material. Because of its widespread availability, such material has been normalized, which
in turn has contributed to a general deterioration in morality.
Nowadays, music is a commodity, and economic success and profitability are given
greater importance than creative expression. This trend has resulted in emphasizing making
music that will sell and appeal to a larger audience. Using coarse language and sexual imagery in
songs and music videos is a marketing tactic to get attention and stir up debate, increasing
visibility and profits. Consequently, there is a surge in crude music and movies, with some artists
going above and beyond what society considers acceptable. Additionally, a new venue for music
and videos to reach a broader audience has been established by the rising popularity of social
media sites like TikTok and Instagram. Many users spread the word about songs with filthy lyrics
and pornographic material, which helps to normalize such content among young listeners.
(Harvard Health, 2020). With all of them, it is essential to look at the factors contributing to the
rise of obscene music and films in modern society.
There are several reasons behind the growth of filthy music. Capitalism, which has turned
music from an art form to a commodity, is one of the main reasons for this. Music has evolved
into a commodity that can be purchased and sold in a capitalist society (Ash-Grimm, 2021).
Because of this, music producers and companies prioritize making commercially successful
music above the music with artistic merit or social responsibility. Due to labels' and producers'
increased desire to make provocative and divisive music, because it sells more, the market-
driven approach to music has resulted in a rise in obscene music. Also, the spread of technology

and the internet has made it simpler for musicians to independently compose and disseminate
music, leading to an uptick in profane music.
The freedom of speech rules is a crucial additional aspect that has led to the emergence of
filthy music. Music creators now have the opportunity to do so with little to no restrictions.
While the right to free speech is a fundamental component of any democracy, it has created
music with explicit content. The musicians' freedom to create songs with derogatory language
and explicit sexual material is seen as a form of self-expression. Without worrying about
censorship or the law, musicians have been able to create music that is challenging, explicit, and
sometimes upsetting (Ash-Grimm, 2021). Going beyond the reasons, it is critical to comprehend
the harm that filthy music and films does to young viewers.
An unfavorable result of repeated exposure to offensive music and films is
desensitization. A person becomes desensitized to something after frequent exposure. This
tendency occurs when listeners are frequently exposed to offensive lyrics and films. People could
stop noticing the sexual material and foul language, which would lower their moral standards.
Harvard Health (2020) claims that continuous exposure to violent media, such as music and
films, might result in desensitization, making people less sensitive to actual violence. The same
holds for offensive music and videos. People are constantly bombarded with explicit words and
images and may get desensitized. To fully grasp the problem of overexposure to obscene music
and films, it is essential to examine its historical background. Additionally, due to exposure to
vulgar music content and videos, one may develop immoral actions and devalue females since
most vulgar videos feature women's sexuality, resulting in objectification as sexual objects.
Exploring any potential solutions to this issue is crucial since excessive exposure to
obscene music and films may harm young listeners' views and conduct (Hogan & Bar-on U,

2020). Including an intervention program in the school the curriculum is one way to address this
issue. An effective intervention program may be created to inform young listeners of the risks
associated with listening to vulgar or violent music. The curriculum should thoroughly grasp
how music may affect attitudes and actions and the effects of sexual and obscene language on
young listeners (Hogan & Bar-on U, 2020). The intervention program may also assist young
listeners in recognizing offensive music and provide them alternatives, such as gospel, classical
music, and jazz, that support uplifting themes and moral principles. Moreover, the curriculum
may educate young listeners on critically evaluating lyrics and messages in music, empowering
them to pick the music they listen to with knowledge (Levitin, 2014). The intervention program
may stop the normalization of inappropriate language and sexual material and foster a more
positive and respectful society by arming young listeners with the information and abilities to
make sensible decisions about the music they consume.
Different musical tastes may positively affect young listeners. For instance, gospel music
spreads uplifting ideas like love, hope, and faith. Jazz music encourages creativity and emotional
expression, while classical music induces relaxation and improves cognitive ability. Giving
young listeners a wide range of musical options may help them develop a diversified musical
taste and prevent overexposure to coarse language (Budson, 2020). It is critical to take action to
build a more supportive and respectful culture after realizing numerous solutions to the issue of
excessive exposure to obscene music and films.
Many steps must be taken to counteract the damaging impacts of vulgar and violent
music. Parents should watch their kids' musical preferences and push them to listen to music that
upholds moral principles. By doing this, parents can guard against desensitizing their kids to
sexual and inappropriate words. Also, school officials want to include an intervention program

that discusses the drawbacks of obscene music and offers alternatives to the curriculum. The
program may teach young listeners to recognize obscene music and how music affects beliefs
and conduct. Last, young listeners should choose music that supports uplifting themes and
morals. By doing this, people may contribute to societal change by favoring uplifting and
inspirational music. Collectively, these steps may alleviate the detrimental effects of vulgar
music and advance a wholesome and uplifting music culture.
In conclusion, overexposure to vulgar music and music videos harms younger
generations by desensitizing them to sexual and obscene language, which causes moral standards
to decrease. An intervention program that educates young listeners about the harmful impacts of
vulgar or violent music and offers alternatives that promote good messages and values is best
suited to address this issue as part of the school curriculum. It is imperative that parents and
school officials carefully monitor music preferences and advance uplifting messages and values.
Also, young listeners should actively look for music that supports uplifting themes and morals.
The intervention program is crucial in the fight against the normalization of sexual material and
foul language in music, and its significance cannot be emphasized. Resources like brochures or
websites promoting uplifting messages and ideals should also be available. By taking action, we
may mitigate the damaging effects of vulgar music and ensure that the next generation is raised
with moral values.
