2 Week 4 Discussion Question 1 According to Fradera (2018), microaggressions cause serious psychological harm even if unintended by the offender. Microaggressions are defined as daily verbal, nonverbal and ecological snubs that are done either deliberately or unintentionally that target individuals premised upon their racial group. Based on the concept of microaggressions, people can discriminate without causing harmful psychological intentions to the other person (Fradera, 2018). For instance, a male lecturer explained that the reason females are under-represented in certain professions is wholly due to their individual choice (Fradera, 2018). Microaggressions are a communal problem, especially targeting minority communities than other interest groups, particularly in institutions like universities or workplaces making it more damaging psychologically on the subjects. Question 2 Microggressions can only be targeted at minority groups by majority ethnic groups. Microaggressions are more than just hurling insults, sensitive comments or generalized jerky conduct. They are something very precise: the sort of remarks, queries, or actions that are painful since they have to do with an individual’s affiliation to a specific group (Kenrick et al., 2019). For example, a Black student who was recently verbally attacked at the universities cafeteria after accidentally stepping on a White student. He was called a black monkey with a long nose. He felt really dejected and it also lowered his self-esteem, albeit the White student was expelled from the institution. Question 3
3 I have witnessed from a close friend being insulted due to his short stature and black color. It is not a pleasant experience as it invokes a reaction, and I was about to be embroiled in a fight with the individual who insulted my friend, but some other students got a hold of me, and was told to report the case to the dean of studies who would take the issue a notch higher. I would recommend my friend to the counselor who will take him through some sessions that will aid for radical healing as the psychiatrist will help to restore self-esteem and teach them how to practice self-care by staying healthy -physically and mentally.
