BLIND ACTIVITY
Participation in this simulation allows you to experience loss of sight and the need to be guided
in your environment.
Whichever activity you choose, please participate safely.
Do not try to
navigate stairs alone, please be sure to have a guide if you attempt to do a blind walk in any
space with significant obstacles that could lead to you injuring yourself.
You have a few options for this activity:
1.
You can recruit a friend and have them lead you on a blind walk.
You should be
blindfolded and have your friend lead you on about a 10-minute walk.
You might also
take a turn leading your friend to see what is like to be the guide.
2.
You can wear a blindfold and walk through several rooms in your own home and perhaps
try to complete a simple task (again for about 10 minutes).
3.
You can eat a meal or at least the first part of a meal blindfolded, either at your home or
at a restaurant.
Complete this form when you have finished the experience.
1.
Describe the experience you chose – what did you do, who was present if anyone, where
were you, etc.
(5 points).
I chose to eat dinner blindfolded with my parents at home.
2.
What difficulties/challenges did you have? List at least 5. (10 pts)
1)
I could not find my chair.
2)
I did not know what dinner is for.
3)
It was hard for me to use utensils.
4)
I did not know the amount of food.
5)
I did not know how much was left on my plate.
3.
For each challenge, describe what you did or what could be done to help resolve the
issue. This could include information from the video or sheet on what to do when
meeting a blind person. (10 points)
1). I requested assistance in locating my chair. 2). I asked my parents tell me
what we were eating for supper. 3). I requested that my parents place the dish
near me so that I could use utensils to get the food. 4). I would avoid overloading
because I can't see how much food I pick up. 5). I asked my parents if there was
anything left in my bowl.
Overall, I use the clock method for my parents to
guide me where things are located so I would not be confused by their directions.
4.
What was the most difficult part of the experience and why? (10 pts)
The most challenging
thing, and the part that I struggle with the most, is that I cannot
pick up every dish by myself. Because Asian dining culture differs from that of most
Westerners. We don't just pile everything on our plates and consume it all. Rather, we
start with our bowl (empty or with rice), share all the dishes, and pick up whatever we
like while eating, so it's a process of repeatedly filling and finishing your bowl. Since I
can't see all the dishes while wearing blindfolds, it's difficult for me to identify the food
in the dish, pick/scoop it up, and carry it safely to my bowl. It is quite easy to make a
mess and take an incredibly long time to do a simple task.
5.
Describe any part of your blind experience that contributed to your understanding of loss
of vision. How did it contribute? This should be a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the
experience and what you learned (15 pts).
While completing my eating blind experience, I gained an understanding of what
problems individuals with vision impairment might encounter when they eat. I also get a
sense of feeling why it is vital for them to have a proper guiding approach, such as the
"clock method" if someone is around to assist them. If not, it is essential for people with
vision impairment to have a well-organized system for everything. Second, there are
concerns when others do not know how to help or when I(an individual with vision
impairment) might feel stressed by the possibility that it might cause trouble for others to
help me and cause disturbance on their stuff.
