Hello everyone and happy Saturday!
One aspect of being a teacher that appeals greatly to me is how important continuous
learning is to the career. I enjoy constantly being challenged while having a vast array of
resources available to me in order to continuously hone my craft as an educator. One
resource I currently use is study.com. This site has a broad variety of subjects presented as
courses. Not only can this serve as a great resource to supplement my curriculum, it provides
me with the opportunity to be a subject matter expert in math, science, social studies, art,
history, and language arts.
I also plan to take advantage of any professional development opportunities my district
makes available. In my time as a student teacher, I have noted the opportunities the
practicing teachers around me have to keep developing their professional skills. I have seen
opportunities for learning GLAD, AVID, IRLA, and the science of reading. I also plan to quickly
identify other educators who work actively to continue growing their practice so I can
exchange training resources. I also plan to find and attend any courses or workshops in order
to keep developing my teaching skills.
I identify my personal and professional goals as skill and knowledge gaps become evident to
me. Currently, I would like to learn more about the science of reading, as I have not had as
much exposure to students learning to read. The majority of my experience with students has
been fifth grade, where the only students who are still learning to read are on an IEP or are
ELLs. As it currently stands, I see gaps in my ability to provide support for students who are
not reading at grade level. While the curriculum I am working with has great differentiation
guidance, I would like to understand this topic better so I can more readily adapt to a diverse
set of student needs.
In addition to what I have shared so far, I would also like to continue reading books about
teaching. During my student teaching, I have read a book on classroom management, which
has helped me a lot. I love being presented with a challenge and educating myself on how to
best overcome it. Teaching is a great career choice for me because the job requires that you
never stop being a student.
