2 The power of social media In the present era of technology, the effect of social media goes beyond its original purpose of connecting people. It now plays a significant role in defining individual identities and affecting society. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok are social media platforms that function as virtual environments where millions of individuals communicate and exchange experiences. The digital sphere facilitates interactions beyond geographical borders and allows people to express themselves, share ideas, and showcase their identities. However, hidden inside this web of connections are deep intricacies that mold individual identities, sway actions, and have diverse societal effects. Social media platforms have become essential to contemporary communication, giving users a virtual platform for self-expression and experience sharing. This means of expression does, however, provide a unique set of difficulties and demands. Presenting oneself genuinely while adhering to the accepted conventions of the online community is a continual challenge for users. This contradiction often causes people to deliberately choose material to project an idealized image of themselves, curating a polished and frequently inflated picture of their life (Oncioiu et al., 2021). They unintentionally stray from their true selves in the process, which makes the difference between the actual world and the one they portray online rather noticeable. The fundamental predicament surrounding social media pertains to the perpetual struggle between preserving one's genuine identity and establishing an appealing virtual persona. Individuals are compelled to selectively highlight the favorable facets of their lives, deliberately omitting their shortcomings and hardships. Through the deliberate concealment of the intricacies and challenges that comprise everyday existence, this discerning sharing generates an alternative reality. Consequently, this façade obscures the differentiation between artistry and genuineness,
3 thereby perpetuating a predicament concerning one's identity. Users discover themselves entangled in a complex network of competing identities as they attempt to reconcile the desire for genuine self-expression with the urge to conform. Identity uncertainty and dissonance may result from the profound psychological consequences of this struggle between one's idealized online persona and true self ( Thirumaran et al., 2021) . A general sense of discontent is further intensified by the disparity between the depicted image and the actual state of affairs, resulting in emotions of insufficiency. The immense societal expectation to conform to social media standards significantly strains individuals' mental well-being. It fosters an environment where genuine self-expression and authenticity are frequently undermined for fear of criticism. The integration of smartphones and the Internet has revolutionized human interaction through constant connectivity and swift information retrieval. People can now remain informed and communicate over great distances due to the notable improvements in ease and connection brought about by this digital transformation. However, worries about addiction have been highlighted by the increased reliance on digital links, especially among younger people. An increased feeling of dependence on digital platforms has resulted from the attraction of continuous contact and participation in online activities, raising the possibility of problems with overuse and addiction ( Diffley & McCole, 2019) . The disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on in-person relationships highlighted the critical role that social media plays in sustaining communication and facilitating a range of activities, including distance learning. Strict limitations on in-person contact to stop the virus's transmission made social media an essential tool for individuals to communicate, exchange knowledge, and pursue educational goals. In a global crisis, it became indispensable for preserving social links, holding virtual meetings, and guaranteeing the continuation of academic pursuits. This time frame highlighted the importance

The pressure to conform to societal norms and the fear of criticism often leads individuals to carefully craft their online personas carefully, meticulously selecting what to share to avoid adverse reactions from peers. This conscious effort to fit into the perceived status quo causes individuals to present a distorted version of their lives, leading to discrepancies between the online persona and one's true identity ( Garrido-Moreno et al., 2020) . This discrepancy, prevalent among millennials and younger generations, creates an identity crisis, blurring the lines between authenticity and fabrication. Social media offers a platform for marginalized voices, enabling individuals to express themselves and advocate for causes they care about. Those who struggle with confidence or face societal pressures find solace in these platforms, gaining newfound courage to voice opinions on diverse subjects ranging from politics to art (Mehraliyev et al., 2021). The ability to express views on pressing issues, like advocating against societal injustices or raising awareness about specific challenges, exemplifies the empowering nature of social media for individuals, including those with disabilities. Despite its positive effects on communication and expression, social media also has a negative side due to cyberbullying and online harassment. Specific platforms provide a cloak of anonymity that often gives people the confidence to participate in risky conduct. The result of this anonymity may be seen in the rise of online harassment, which can take many different forms, including unsolicited messaging, posting of pornographic information without permission, and the dishonest practice of adopting fake identities, sometimes known as "catfishing." Victims of these unfavorable interactions usually suffer from severe emotional discomfort and
5 psychological damage (Oncioiu et al., 2021). The anonymity afforded by social networking platforms has its disadvantages. While granting individuals the liberty to express themselves freely without concern about criticism or adverse outcomes, it also facilitates the dissemination of undesirable behavior. The ability to remain anonymous often acts as a catalyst for cyberbullying, which may have detrimental effects on individuals' mental health and overall welfare. Online harassment victims endure stress that permeates beyond the digital sphere, impacting their psychological well-being and relationships with others in real life. Because of the ease with which offenders may conceal their identities or use pseudonyms, trust is undermined, and a generalized feeling of unease pervades online groups. The widespread practice of catfishing is an example of how people use anonymity to trick others, often fabricating complex fake identities to control feelings and relationships. Examples shown in the media, like the documentary series "Catfish," demonstrate how simple it is for people to create completely made-up lives and relationships over the internet. These dishonest tactics weaken user confidence and increase the vulnerability of those looking for genuine relationships. Beyond only causing emotional anguish, catfishing has detrimental effects on victims' sentiments of betrayal and disillusionment, which affects their views of authenticity and trust in online relationships ( Christou & Chatzigeorgiou, 2020) . In general, the anonymity of social media platforms promotes freedom of speech but also creates an atmosphere favorable for online harassment and dishonest conduct, which lowers the sense of safety and confidence in online communities. Beyond interpersonal relationships, social media significantly impacts how consumers behave and perceive brands. Social media influencers, or SMIs, are influential individuals who use their platforms to sway consumers' perceptions of certain businesses. Their interaction and
6 content greatly influence brand loyalty and customer purchase choices, proving the broad impact of social media on business operations (Nafees et al., 2021). Social media affects several businesses, most notably the travel and tourist industry. Social media is essential for spreading information and changing the dynamics of the travel industry during emergencies or after unethical events. According to research by Liu et al. (2021), social media influences visitors' cognitive and affective reactions, destination perceptions, and post-incident market reconfiguration. This demonstrates how important the platform is in influencing public opinion and the ensuing changes to the tourist sector's environment. In conclusion, the inescapable impact of social media on individual identity and society is indisputable. Although technology offers a means for self-expression and empowerment, it also presents intricate issues that undermine genuineness and subject people to diverse pressures and threats. Understanding these intricacies comprehensively is essential for safely navigating the digital environment and promoting a harmonious equilibrium between one's online representation and authentic personality. The influence of social media goes beyond individuals and affects market dynamics and cultural attitudes, highlighting the need to use it thoughtfully and sophisticatedly.
