In order to better understand others who are different from you, it would be useful to
immerse yourself in other cultures, increase your social contact with others, and have the
opportunity to experience a new “minority status.” Please choose from one of the
following options The purpose of this assignment is for you to experience a social identity
group with whom your comfort and exposure is limited. Choose an activity that stretches
your personal comfort zone and is of significant meaning to you. You are expected to
embark on this experiential activity alone. Upon completing the experience, write down
notes about the experience, your reactions, and what you learned, which you can use to
write a
3 page paper; double spaced
. APA format is required if you use additional
materials in your writing

o
Attend a church service of a different faith (Ex. If you were raised Christian, perhaps

o
Have a conversation with a person from a culture different from your own and directly
discuss your differences. For example, this may mean the person is from another

from your own. Include in your paper both similarities and differences between your

during their lifetime.

CLASSMATE’S POST
(100 WORDS)
I chose to interview my grandma who is a young 77. We talked for about an hour on
November 6th, though I feel she could have talked for the whole day. I chose this activity
because I love the idea of documenting my family’s stories down so we can have it to look
back on forever. Those memories and moments are so valuable, and I hate the idea of
missing out on hearing them or telling my kids about them. I feel like there's never a right
time to formally ask "tell me stories from your childhood" so having it be assigned kind of
opens that door up for all these exciting things. Unrelated to the diversity lens, I asked her a
ton about my grandpa who passed not too long ago. Hearing about their first couple dates,
challenges, and drama was just so fulfilling beyond words. In terms of diversity, it was
interesting to hear about protests that were occurring on tv or on her college campus. She
mainly remembers protests about Vietnam, but civil rights were usually talked about on tv as
well. It was interesting to hear about women progressing in the workforce and pinpointing
the ways in which the "glass ceiling" rose and where it stands today. I think beyond the
classroom, these assignments remind you how recent certain law passages occurred. It
reminds you that a lot of issues are still in early stages of being overcome, even though it
feels like federal changes were made so long ago. Women still face glass-ceilings and
experience difficulty rising to management positions. They are also still working on
infiltrating male-dominated industries. Not to mention equality across races still has much to
go. Overall, the assignment ended up meaning a lot to me and felt like I was honoring my
grandma’s story.
