Constructed Meaning and Perception
An example of loaded language that I have seen on social media, television, and many
other advertisement places is Donald Trump's slogan “Make America Great Again.” Trump’s
entire campaign from 2016 was built upon this slogan. The way that people in America translated
this phrase used by Trump was that it was a form of racism. Some women had fears that his
slogan meant taking America back to the era of pre-civil rights. This was offensive to some and
depending on how the slogan was interpreted or accepted was offensive to more people. To help
the verbal communication and change the outcome of how Trump’s slogan, “Make America
Great Again,” was responded to, removing the word “Again” could have changed everything.
The slogan “Make America Great” would have been easier for people to accept because when
the word “Again” is added the past is thought of. America’s past brings on the ideas of slavery,
segregation, women not having equal rights, and many other issues.
The two statements from our textbooks I do not believe necessarily contradict each other.
I do, however, believe that they both have very strong meanings. The statement from Chapter 3
means that the language we hear being used creates a perception of the world. The statement
from Chapter 4 means that the values are carved into the words we use to create our perception
and the perception of others. The way that the statement from Chapter 3 reflects on Donald
Trump’s slogan is that for some it created the perception that he was a racist man who wanted
America to go back to its old ways. The way that the statement from Chapter 4 reflects his slogan
is that it created tension between the people. Those who agreed with what they thought Trump
meant in his slogan were categorized by the people who did not agree with his slogan. It caused
tension and riots among Americans.
