Hi Class
I enjoyed the article “Communications in the Workplace” by Ruth Wienclaw and after
reading it I was able to connect between the concepts in the article and one of my own
experiences in the workplace also the article presented many interesting points regarding
communication.
As I read the article, I thought of different scenarios I was in with different companies. I
relized that over the years I have had managers majority of them listen and comminated
effectively. I can honestly say that over the years I lacked a communicator, but it was something
I have learned from my managers to be an effective communicator. So now in my current position I was promoted to supervisor of patient access as much as
I wanted the position, I was not ready to oversee a department. But when accepting the position I
never communicated my feeling to the director but instead I jumped head first into this role and
took charge of it but it has been 8 months and I am not happy as I was when I accepted the
position you would think it would be the conflict between employees that was my issue it is not
it is the conflict between my director and staff that makes it difficult to run this department as I
am stuck in the middle, Day by day I am regretting taking on this role and due to the type of
director I have I am scared I will communicate concerns in a wrong manner and she will retaliate
so I requested a meeting with the union and my union representative and I communicated my
concerns and fears with them. they listen to me and help me approach the situation through the
proper channels with their support and I am still here but looking at training on conflict
resolutions to see if this will help me approach the conflict between my staff and the director as
well as with me and my director and time will tell if it is working.
At this point in my career i know for me to be successful communication is key to that
success. One thing over the years I have learned is that everyone has their own different
communication style and when working with people with these different communication styles I
must learn to adjust how I communicate with my staff. I work in a diverse area and many of
them come from diverse backgrounds, ages, and some have disabilities so as long I am familiar
with these, I understand how I must approach my communication style, so it is effective for
everyone. This is the reason my relationships with my staff have been so great, and we are able
to effectively communicate with each other, unlike with my director.
