Marginalized Student Populations
Programs that educate students to develop good attitudes, create and attain desired goals,
and successfully establish, maintain, and mend interpersonal relationships are today's most
widely used strategies for promoting students' emotional health and well-being. Having a
classroom that includes children of varying socioeconomic statuses and academic prowess is
crucial to the success of all learners. A teacher's values must be examined before fostering a more
welcoming classroom for all students (Wang, 2018). As with the general population, educators
can grow up with implicit prejudices without realizing it. As the data demonstrates, female
students are given a less and lesser quality assessment in the classroom compared to their male
counterparts and students of color often describe feeling alone in class. Therefore, becoming
more conscious of issues of ethnic equity and gender parity and better able to assist students in
your classroom may be aided by developing a knowledge of your perspectives and experiences
or the conditions that shape your identity in terms of color, gender, and abilities.
When some people or groups are given preferential treatment while others are excluded
for no good reason other than their status in the privileged group, this is called privilege (Mudge
& Higgins, 2011). Educators who benefit from privilege regularly may find it difficult to
acknowledge that they have it. It is crucial to see how privilege shapes some people's lives while
limiting others. For instance, females and students of color may be less likely to be
acknowledged for several reasons, even if these factors may not always impact outcomes directly
(Mudge & Higgins, 2011). When privilege distorts our relationships and judgments with others
and creates or perpetuates institutional barriers for people who do not hold a specific advantage,
it becomes undesirable. Regarding America's underprivileged student population, some
demographics enjoy functioning in environments that are naturally more favorable to their
3
accomplishment. In contrast, others, through no fault of their own, are placed in environments
that make achievement more challenging. One kind of White privilege is the presumption that
White individuals will comply with educational regulations unless they demonstrate otherwise.
In contrast, persons of color, especially African Americans and Latinos, are frequently viewed
through a criminal lens unless they prove otherwise.
