Gaining Comprehension and Practice: Observing Nonverbal Behaviors
1.
What is the topic you and your partner are talking about?
The topic that my partner and I were talking about was " the politicians' role in ensuring
the well-being and economic stability of the people who entrusted them with such important
positions in society." The reason for selecting such a sensitive and hot topic was because, in the
recent past, many public members have filed complaints against the people they elect to
represent them in the government due to the fake promises they are given during the campaign
period. Again, the reason for choosing the government official was because he is my
representative, and thus, shedding some light on complex questions the citizens ask could be of
much significance in making them informed and knowledgeable about their government.
2.
What kinds of nonverbal behaviors does your partner have?
The kinds of nonverbal behaviors exhibited by my partner include facial expressions such
as nodding and biting of the lips, inability to maintain eye contact when discussing severe crimes
committed by members holding high positions in the government and the use of body language,
including locking of both hands, fidgeting, use of gestures and proxemics. Furthermore, my
partner had nonverbal behaviors such as posture, body movement and paralanguage in bits,
although I could not understand most of them as I have not specialized in that language.
However, I knew where he was coming from, given that he had previously held other jobs before
his current position.
3.
Why do you think your partner has such nonverbal reactions?
The reason why my partner has such nonverbal reactions is that he is either lying or
uncomfortable to discuss on the topic despite the fact that using facial expressions enables people
to have an effective form of nonverbal communication. My partner could also be expressing a

diverse range of feelings, from sadness and happiness to fear and fury, among many other
emotions in between. Maintaining eye contact is a significant nonverbal reaction and an essential
component of the communication process. By maintaining eye contact, my partner could have
implied curiosity, warmth and self-assurance or even coldness, apathy and insecurity depending
on the specific question and context of the case hence important for the speaker to understand
these crucial aspects of nonverbal communication. Also, I think my partner uses body language,
one of the nonverbal reactions such as proxemics and gestures, to convey a wide range of
messages and feelings to the involved parties. These feelings are fear and submission or
dominance and aggressiveness by the individual. Gestures such as nodding, raising eyebrows and
widely opening one's eyes could be used to agree and show that one is surprised.
4.
Are there any unique nonverbal behaviors from your partner?
Although there were some nonverbal behaviors from my partner that I would consider
unique, they are not many, which is why I do not find it odd for people to freely express their
genuine feelings about a specific perspective or topic without having to talk. Some of these
nonverbal behaviors included facial expressions where my partner opened his mouth, lifted his
eyebrows and used eyes and facial muscles to express how he felt the conversation was
progressing, thereby conveying information through such emotions without his knowledge. I
found these unique due to their ambiguousness as an individual might open their mouth and eyes
wide open and raise their eyebrows to show surprise or even as a way of agreeing to whatever is
being discussed.
