Topic: An Investigation into the Role, Practice, Concerns and Future Aspirations of a
Community Group: A Case of Youth Forum at Grange Pavilion
Background 300 (community group importance, Theories, Youth Forum at Grange
Pavilion and 1 line for research focus)
A community is considered as a familiar thread responsible for bringing individuals
together to advocate and support one another and experience a sense of belonging in this
world (King and Gillard, 2019). Social identity theory predicts certain intergroup behavioural
patterns of individuals and aims to
explain the way in which individuals create and define
their place in society. The theory determines that their sense of individuality and the way
relate to others is typically influenced in the way they view other individuals and groups
around them (
Bochatay
et al.,
2019)
. Communities are varied groups of people that help an
individual to learn and develop new ideas. In the context of social identity theory, a society is
where an individual’s relations with each other are direct and personal and where a complex
web of social ties connect them in mutual bonds of emotion and obligation. Participating in a
community provides empowerment and a sense of control to enable the individuals to
influence positive change and discover their self-worth.
The Citizenship Model is
a concept for organising the welfare state where the citizen
manages and controls their entitlements, in the context of their community of family and
friends (O'Dowd, 2020). The word “citizenship” is a broad concept meaning
connecting the
individual to a community by inculcating a sense of belonging. The model aims to
empowering people to influence the decisions which affecting their lives and ensuring their
active participation in communities to understand the political, social, and economic context
of their participation make informed decisions. The Youth Forum is a group of young people
from Grangetown, who want to help provide opportunities for young people to engage in
activities and various clubs with the aim to help develop the area. In this regard, this research
aims to investigate the role, practice, concerns and future aspirations of a community group,
with respect to the youth forum at Grange Pavilion.
7.2 Recommendations 200 Varsha
The existence of community groups is the concept by which people come together to
identify common objectives or goals, strategically utilize available resources, and, in other
ways, develop and implement strategies for reaching the objectives they want to accomplish.
In the context of developing strategies to support the working of community groups, the
initial step is to define or identify the purpose of the group. Defining the real purpose is a
great way to motivate the individuals to participate or volunteer in the community group
(
Bryson, Edwards and Van Slyke
¸2018)
. Another method to encourage are development in
the Youth Forum is to give the youth an opportunity to offer their input and incorporate their
appropriate ideas into practicality and further encourage more innovative ideas.
Another
possible strategy might include the active collaboration between adults and yout
h and
integrat
ing
youth into committees with adults who can act as mentors
and impart their
knowledge and skill to them (
Forge
et al.,
2018)
. Inclusion of fun learning activities is
another approach to
support the working of community groups
. For better publicity and
advertisement of the community group, a media coverage can be implemented as a part of
proactive strategy. For this, a spokesperson can be designated to develop and share stories for
the target audience. A brief, easily sharable, fact sheets about the community group,
highlighting the efforts to resolve legitimate community concerns, can be prepared to be
presented. These strategies are recommended to
support the working of community groups,
mainly Youth Forum
in the scope of
area development
.
