Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. After reading the article Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Dont's, my thoughts on how I would apply this information as a Social Worker is I would implement an assessment on each family member and do a family assessment. This would allow me to understand the family identity and to see if there are any differences in opinions on how the family themselves see each other. This will help me with a treatment plan and setting goals. After reading this article it also reminds me to not be judgemental and to use the information they are giving me to help them understand what they are doing is not working and that setting goals together is a way to help them reach their goals. Paying close attention to the cultural influences I am learning is a big part of Social Work that I have not given a lot of thought about. This requires me to do more research and to make sure I am serving my families in the correct way with knowledge about their culture to be able to help them appropriately. Benefits that I see in working with families is it gives you more information and views on what is happening with your client. It also allows your clients to see how much support they have from their family members. It opens up great opportunities for communication needs within a family and encourages problem-solving strategies. Interventions can help your client and help other family members be able to help the client outside of your sessions. Challenges that I see working with families are interparental conflict, parenting abilities, and lack of effort to maintain the goal at hand for a
certain individual in the family. These could include things like divorced parents, or cultural differences.
