Module Five Journal Purpose of the interview: Influence behavior (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). From watching the video, it appeared as though the officer already had all the evidence and information he needed to make an arrest of the suspect and he was conducting the interview in order to obtain a confusion, and reasoning for the crime committed. The officer attempted to persuade the suspect to think about his answers and the denial of the crime, because he knew he was lying. Two interview techniques: Carefully prepare and Listen (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). The officer was clearly prepared and had done his research into the case in regards to what type of shoes the suspect was wearing and gathering information from the victim about the suspect. The officer was listening to the suspect and identified information the suspect was lying about by picking up on the nonverbal communication of the suspect looking away from him as he spoke and then asking the suspect why he was looking away from him. The techniques used by the officer were very effective in this interview because the officer was prepared and he presented the evidence to the suspect, which showed the suspect he was already caught and the officer’s listening skills and being about to observe nonverbal behavior helped him catch the suspect in a lie, making the suspect realize he was not going to get away from it. The officer using these techniques, eventually led to the confession by the suspect. Another technique that could have been used is, be a good actor (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). This could have been used in a way to act, or pretend that you have bullet proof evidence, such as eye-witness of video footage of the crime, to see if the suspect would confess at that point, believing he was already caught with solid evidence. This would be effective to convince the
suspect, whom you already know committed the crime due to the evidence you do have, to realize he was already caught, or to realize there is no point in lying any longer. Being a good actor could lead the suspect to believe everything you are saying is true, and this could cause the suspect to be honest, and confess, due to realizing they are already caught, and taking the weight off their shoulders of being dishonest and lying.
