Communication – Luther and Nilsson
1.
Ms. Luther uses effective communication skills to make her expectations clear to students.
Describe two examples of how she communicates her expectations to her students.
In the video, Ms. Luther used effective communication skills to make her expectations clear to
her students. Two examples are:
1.
In the video, Ms. Luther asked the students if they were supposed to be talking as well as
asked them how loud they should be talking. Ms. Luther then asked them to practice their
voices when they answered her questions. When Ms. Luther was giving her class
instructions, Ms. Luther also walked around her classroom as she repeated her expectations
to her students. Ms. Luther also made sure to ask her class clarifying questions while giving
her students said instructions.
2.
Another example in the video was when Ms. Luther told her students, “ I will know that you
are ready when your items are on your desk and when you are sitting on your hands.” In this
example, Ms. Luther is giving her students clear expectations for what they need to do in
order to show her that they are ready to start their lesson.
2.
Effective student to student and student to teacher communication is also vital in an effective
classroom. Describe at least two strategies that Ms. Luther uses to encourage communication
and conversation.
In the video, Ms. Luther seems to be a highly skilled and effective teacher who is able to create
an interactive and engaging classroom environment for her students. Ms. Luther is able to
demonstrate her deep understanding when it comes to her students’ needs and uses various
strategies in order to enhance their learning experience.
Two examples of Ms. Luther using encouraging communication and conversation shown in the
video are:
1.
In the video, Ms. Luther is shown encouraging her students to use their critical thinking
skills by asking questions about the problems that they were working on. Ms. Luther also
made sure to provide very clear and thorough explanations of each step to ensure that all of
her students were understanding the material. Ms. Luther also made sure to end each of her
lessons by giving her students complete instructions for their next assignment. Ms. Luther
then checks for her students comprehension over the group project.
2.
In the video it also showed Ms. Luther realized that her students needed further explanation
over the project. Once Ms. Luther had recognized the need for clarification over the
instructions after walking around her classroom and checking for her students
understanding, Ms. Luther then proceeds to take time to assist each individual group and
discusses the assignment with them as well as helps them get started on it.
3.
Ms. Nilsson uses technology and visual tools during her photography lesson. Explain how these
tools enhance her instruction and communication of lesson objectives.
The use of technology and visual tools is a great way to help enhance a student's learning as well
as stimulate the student’s creativity. These tools can help aid students with comprehension as
well as help them generate new ideas. Ms. Nielsson wanted to show her students the right way
to take a picture and the wrong way to take a picture and in order to do this, Ms. Nielsson used a
photograph to help show her students a visual. This was a positive approach to helping the
students understand the expectations as well as help the students improve their skills. The
visual aid helped in the learning process and they are a definite asset to the students because it
gives the students a better grasp on the subject matter as well as helps develop their creative
thinking.
4.
Ms. Luther and Ms. Nilsson both use effective communication with students. How are the
communication techniques of the two teachers similar and different? Explain your response
using specific examples from each classroom.
Both Ms. Luther and Ms. Nilsson displayed effective communication with their students. Both
teachers had similar techniques as well as had some techniques that differed from each other.
Both teachers asked their students questions in order to ensure that their students remained
engaged throughout their lesson. Ms. Luther ask her students questions to help them
understand the information as well as to check for their understanding, while Ms. Nilsson had
her students “teach” part of the lesson by asking questions.
In order to help close any gaps in the students knowledge, Ms. Nilsson uses photos to help with
this. This technique is good at helping students grasp more difficult ideas and concepts. On the
other hand, In the video, Ms. Lutheris shown using group work to encourage student-to-student
communication. This also helped with student-to-teacher communication as well. This approach
allowed for Ms. Luther’s students to learn from other students as well as gave them the
opportunity to teach each other. By using these different methods, both teachers were able to
fulfill all of the different learning styles and ensure that each of their students were able to
succeed in their learning
