STEP 1a: List 3 things you learned about a Crisis Management Plan. Cell will expand as you type.
-Early warning signs vs. imminent warning signs. -There are various post-traumatic stress reactions. -The custodian or building engineer is advised, by the principal, to turn off the main gas supply valve during a tornado warning. STEP 1b: List 2 things that surprised you about a Crisis Management Plan. Cell will expand as you type .
-Code words are used to signal a lockdown. -It is helpful to ask students and other staff members for assistance during a crisis. STEP 2: In at least 100 words, summarize your thoughts regarding what you learned, what surprised you, and why
. Cell will expand as you type.
Although I was unaware of how many post-traumatic stress reactions there are, I now understand the importance of being aware of them.
Furthermore, I was oblivious to the difference between early and imminent warning signs and what they are used for. I had never considered how crucial it was for me to learn about the gas supply valve being shut off during tornado warnings. As a student, I had never had to consider the importance or reasoning behind this. However, it was amazing to learn how many different factors, such as this, have to be taken care of in order to protect the students and staff. One thing that completely surprised me was that it was helpful to ask students for assistance during these incidents. This shocked me because of the safety precautions that teachers have to take in order to protect their students. The last thing that really surprised me was that there are code words used when a threat exist. Although I knew this is a normal thing, I did not know this was expected in every school board. STEP 3: Application. In at least 300 words, reflect on your experience or what you would want to ensure in a school you would teach at. How would you apply this knowledge to your safety and student safety? What recommendations would you make to your school leadership?
I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge from this assignment, and I will take this with me throughout all of my teaching career.
In my future school, I will suggest the use of code words in any crisis where a student’s safety might be in jeopardy. When I was a student, we practiced code words/phrases for an outside threat or intruder. The announcement would be made that “The dolphin is in the building” (the dolphin was our mascot), and everyone knew that meant we were going into lockdown and that there was a threat. I think it is also extremely important to ensure that the staff is properly trained for post-traumatic stress reactions. By being trained in this area, students will feel safe and cared for, and the staff will feel confident when handling these situations. This is also necessary for both early and imminent warning signs, as both call for different responses. One wrong move can lead to a disaster, so this is why it is so essential for teachers to be trained in various areas of safety. I would observe my students, listen to their conversations, and make suggestions for changes based on what I learned. For instance, if I overhear a student expressing her fear of coming forward with information about another student, I would be sure that I and all other teachers have built relationships with our students. If students feel comfortable with
EDUC 350
their teacher, it is so much easier for the them to come forward with possible threats. This is why I have learned that student assistance during a crisis is essential because without information that can only come from another student or classmate, the school could be at a higher risk of danger. With the amazing information I have learned from reading the “School Crisis Management Plan”, I will incorporate this into my classroom and school board!

QUESTION 5
You are the engineer responsible for the design and installation of plumbing in a new public elementary school under construction. The project is
running behind schedule ad above budget. The latest catch is that the supplier has not delivered the specified backflow preventers. Although a
strike at the manufacturer's plant has been settled, the back order list is moving slowly. The engineer serving as coordinator of the project orders
you to obtain less expensive backflow preventers that are readily available from another manufacturer. These backflow preventers are of lesser
quality than those specified in the plans, have a history of occasional failure, and are likely to need earlier replacement. What should you do?
O A. Order and install the available backflow preventers, but refuse to sign off on this portion of the job.
O B. Order and install the available backflow preventers, informing the school board that this equipment may not last as long, but will help the
project…

Question #14, Case 4: HVAC units
The general contractor on this project chose not to purchase the heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment from the mechanical
subcontractor, but rather they purchased it directly from the manufacturer. Why
would a GC do this? The shop drawings were submitted and were per
specifications. The submittal was approved and returned on time. The equipment
was delivered on time, but because the HVAC subcontractor had not yet mobilized
on-site, the GC unloaded the mechanical units from the truck and hoisted them to
location with the GC's own crane. The subcontractor connected the equipment
after placement. The system was completed on schedule, but on a very hot design
day, during HVAC balancing, it is discovered that the units are not keeping up
with air conditioning requirements. The labels are checked, and it is discovered
that they are undersized by one-third from the specified units. The approved
submittal does not match up with what has…
