A teacher wants to know if using flash cards will increase her students’ scores on the weekly spelling tests. How could she conduct an experiment to test her idea? For each of the following terms, include a definition and description of what would be involved for this teacher’s experiment: 1. Control group 2. Experimental group 3. Independent variable 4. Dependent variable 5. Confounding variables If a teacher wants to know whether or not using flash cards will increase her students’ scores on the weekly spelling tests, here, a control group which is a group of subjects that gets all conditions except the independent variable is a group of students who take classes without having flash cards activity. In contrast, an experiential group, a group that receives an independent variable is a group of students who take classes with flash cards activity. Here, an independent variable which is conditions altered by the experimenter or the cause is flash cards. A dependent variable which is conditions measured by the experimenters which are the outcomes that may change as a result of the independent variable is the students’ scores on the weekly spelling tests. We have to consider confounding variables, something other than the independent variable that could also affect what is being studied. Here, confounding variables could be students who study for the weekly spelling tests at home and students who get tutors for the weekly spelling tests.
