Lab 3: Do You See the Light? REPORT FORM Answer the following discussion questions. Support your claim using evidence, i.e., experimental data and/or observations that support the claim. Cite specific quantitative results (i.e., time duration of luminescence). Connect your evidence (data and/or observations) to your claim using reasoning that explains why your evidence supports your claim. Reasoning should be based on a scientific rule, law, principle or definition. Question #1. What are some indications of a chemical or physical change you’ve observed in step 1? Explain your reasoning. Question #2. What are some indications of a chemical or physical change you’ve observed in step 2? Explain your reasoning. Question #3. How long did your chemiluminescence persist? What are some factors that might have contributed to the length of this phenomenon? Explain using your observations. Step 1 we saw chemical and physical changes. First to explain what chemical and physical changes are. A chemical change is when a chemical substance is transformed into one or more different substance. A physical change is a change in physical properties of a substance, as in its size or shape. The most common example of that is when water is boiled or frozen into ice. Since we formed luminol in step 1 it is evident that we had a chemical change by adding several elements. The change in temperature also demonstrated the chemical change. There were also physical changes as the solution changed colors several times from a yellowish color to dark red and brownish color. By the end of step 1 we also put it in an ice bath and a solid was formed at the bottom of the vial. Similarly to step 1 during step 2 there were several indicators of chemical and physical change during step 2. After the vacuum filtration step, we took the 10% NaOH which was now a solid and mixed it with deionized water and the previous chemicals used in step I. Adding both substances together changed the chemical state of it as we were mixing several chemicals together and had a new substance. Also by the end of step 2 the vial was eating up without even having to use the hotplate. Throughout the process of making luminol we changed the physical state several times. For example, when we used the vacuum, we change it from a liquid to a solid. Another physical change was when we placed it in the ice bath. Our chemiluminescence lasted for around 31 second. The most prominent factor that contributed to the length of the phenomenon was the temperature. If the temperature is greater than more light is released however it is over a short period of time. The time and temperature are opposite and directionally proportional so as one increases in the other
Question #4. Describe the intensity of your chemiluminescence. What could have increased/decreased the intensity of the glow? Explain using your observations. Question #5. What evidence in Part II showed that energy was released during the luminol test/reaction? Explain your reasoning. Question #6. Our chemiluminescence was strong but its wasn’t throughout for all 31 seconds. As I mentioned in the previous question a higher temperature would have increased the intensity while a lower temperature would have decreased the intensity. The reason for that is when you increase the temp the reaction speeds up making it release more light for a shorter time. Another way we could have increased the intensity of the glow was by adding hydrogen peroxide as it is the most significant oxidizing agent, and it increases the luminescent intensity of luminol. Stirring also helped increase the luminescence. Evidence that showed that energy was released in part II during the luminol reaction occurred as light was released during the process. There was large amount of light which was released as seen in the video throughout the chemiluminescence process which showed how energy was released.
