Lohandra Almeida MED 300 Reflection 2 The readings for this module were beneficial because they taught me new things and reminded me of some things I had forgotten. Something that caught my attention was discovering the various nudges mentioned in the Roadmap to Better Health PowerPoint in the module. It was fascinating to learn about because I’d never heard of something like this before. The PowerPoint states that there are three different kinds of nudges. There are environmental prompts, economic prompts, and educational prompts. The environmental nudges aim to "promote work environments that motivate individuals to walk for 30 minutes daily" (Joyner, M., Landman, N., Smolt, R., White, A., & Cortese, D., 2015). I think this should be introduced in every workplace because it will help people stay active, and it will also help with the tiredness that comes from sitting in an office all day. The second suggestion mentioned was the economic suggestion: to "change health insurance costs and deductibles based on PA level, weight" (Joyner, M., Landman, N., Smolt, R., White, A., & Cortese, D., 2015). This may be possible, but it could cause more issues, especially for people who are too heavy or light. This will make the negative perception of weight even worse than it is. Health insurance deductibles should be the same for everyone, regardless of their size or level of physical activity. The final suggestion mentioned in the presentation was the educational suggestion. The PowerPoint presentation includes information about the importance of physical activity in the school curriculum (Joyner, M., Landman, N., Smolt, R., White, A., & Cortese, D., 2015). This is very important, especially for elementary schools, because children have a lot of energy to use up. Also, it helps kids learn from a young age to value the significance of exercise. I recall when I was in primary school, and they had a break time and a physical education class to help us stay active during the day. These readings will benefit me as a professional because they will remind me of the significance of my physical health. It's easy to get too focused on your work, but it's important to keep moving throughout the day. I will also include this in my work life by reminding others around
me how important it is to stay active during the day even if it's a 30-minute walk on a treadmill or outdoors. An article I discovered mentioned that "being active can also assist in keeping a healthy weight, lowering the chance of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers" ("The Importance of Physical Fitness"). Being physically active has many advantages that everyone should engage in. It doesn't matter where or how you begin; what matters is that you feel positive afterward. While reading the required readings for this module, I wondered why fast-food restaurants in the United States serve such large drink sizes. In Canada, the size of the fast food drink cups was small. A big cup in Canada was a medium in the United States. If the drink sizes were smaller, it would greatly assist in reducing obesity. It will reduce sugar consumption and help people eliminate sugary beverages like soda. Another idea I had while reading was that someone can exercise every day but still be "obese,” so why do we still have this stereotype about people who are slightly overweight? For instance, I exercise every day for at least 30 minutes and think I am in good health. However, due to my genetics, I have a larger build. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall, and my bones are quite broad, so it is challenging not to be seen as overweight. I know that being physically active is important and positively impacts your life. However, some people are always active but still don't lose weight. Linking the information from the readings in the module, the PowerPoint, and the textbook. As humans, several things connect between the two. Some things that are related to each other are opposites. One thing I observed that was different between the two was that in the textbook, it mentioned: "... - if, for example, the fractured leg had been caused by dementia- his responsibility was to disregard the problems or send the individual elsewhere to handle them, like a nursing home" (Gawande, pg 111). This is the complete opposite of what the PowerPoint says to do. The PowerPoint teaches you about the significance of physical activity. However, in the book, Dr. Gawande cannot assist the patients even though he wants to. The head nurse told Dr. Gawande that he was mixing the care he provided with treatment instead. It's hard to believe that it was considered okay not to provide patients with the necessary treatment in the past. The book is relevant to the assigned reading in this module because Dr. Gawande was trying to assist his patients in recovering from their injuries, similar to how the PowerPoint emphasizes the significance of physical activity. However, Dr.
Gawande couldn't assist his patients as he had desired. He had to ignore it as if it was unimportant, which was not okay with him. Overall, it is crucial to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Whether going for a 30-minute walk every day or working out. Exercise helps to improve your quality of life greatly. It can lower the chance of certain illnesses, like heart disease. Another interesting thing to note from these readings is the contrast between the hospital setting in the past and the present. Now, it is not okay to refuse assistance and medical care for a broken leg, but in the past, it was considered normal because that's how things were done. References
