Report
1 Report for Laboratory Exercise #5 Synthesis of Tetramethylammonium Triiodide and Tetramethylammonium Pentaiodide NMe 4 I 3 and NMe 4 I 5 Using Microsoft Word, students are to insert responses in all yellow highlighted areas. It is recommended that the report be completed without changing font size, column width, row width, margins and highlights. The completed report must be uploaded to the CHEM 101 Brightspace site as a .pdf file by the due date posted on Brightspace. All answers must be the student’s own work without assistance from others. Only reports which are completed using this template will be marked. Abstract By reacting I 2 with NMe 4 I in solution with control of the reaction stoichiometry, Me 4 NI 3 and Me 4 NI 5 were synthesised. The % yield for Me 4 NI 3 was 27.0%, and the % yield for Me 4 NI 5 was 76.4 % . Data/Results Table 1. Experimental data and calculated values for the preparation of Me 4 NI 3 and Me 4 NI 5 Synthesis Me 4 NI 3 Me 4 NI 5 NMe 4 I (g) 0.505g 0.507g I 2 (g) 0.509g 1.315g actual yield (g) 0.186g 1.276g theoretical yield (g) 0.688g 1.671g % yield 27.0% 76.4% Discussion Respond to the following: Write the balanced chemical equations for formation of each of the products: NMe 4 I + I 2 NMe 4 I 3 NMe 4 I + 2I 2 NMe 4 I 5 In your own words, describe the determination of the limiting reagent in each of the preparations. (max. 5 lines) When determining the limiting agent, find the balanced equation. Which ever reactant has least moles is the limiting agent. In both reactions calculate the moles of the reactants, for example, by dividing the grams of NMe 4 I by the molar mass of NMe 4 I to get the moles (0.00252). Discuss the meaning of the % yield in your own words, do not just give a formula. Comment on the % yield observed for each of the products, include the actual values (max 4 lines). In both of my reactions the % yield was under 100% which means the reaction did not go to completion. If the % yield was above 100% than it may be because there is an impurity present.
2 Comparing my actual values of the NMe 4 I 3 reaction with my peers, my actual value was extremely low compared. This could be because of a experimental error. Provide the limiting reagent for each of the preparations. In the first reaction ( NMe 4 I 3 ) the limiting agent is I 2. And in the second reaction ( NMe 4 I 5 ) the limiting agent is NMe 4 I . __ Conclusions To concluded the result for this experiment, the % yield for Me 4 NI 3 was 27.0% , and the % yield for Me 4 NI 5 was 76.4 % . Pre-lab quiz: Are all responses correct? 4 Laboratory Notebook: Have all data, observations and procedures been recorded? 1 Report: Are all sections completed accurately? Are responses in the Discussion correct? Does the conclusion only include the appropriate information? Are the References correctly formatted and cited? 3 Participation: Did the student come prepared, was time used well in lab and was student engaged in the experiment? Did the student show the email confirmation letter and request the TA to check their drawers for completeness before they left the lab? 1 Performance evaluation: Did student follow the safe practice guidelines throughout the whole lab period? 1 Total mark 10 © 2023, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science
