Ch01 Assignment: Ron Nafttali Ecological Systems Payton is a 12-year-old girl. She lives with her two parents, her younger brother, and the family dog in a middle-class, suburban neighborhood of a large city. Both of her parents work full-time. Her mother is an architect and her father is a city planner. Payton is in sixth grade and attends the local middle school. Her school recently received an award for teaching excellence. She has a close group of friends who she spends time with almost every day. Here is an example of the beginning of a day in the life of Payton: It is 6:30 on Tuesday morning. Payton and her younger brother are getting ready for school. Her parents are getting ready for work. By 6:45, everyone is in the kitchen to eat breakfast. Payton asks her father if he can help her with an art project tonight. He tells her that he will not be able to because he has a city meeting to attend until 9:00 p.m. Payton’s mom tells her that she will help with the art project tonight. Her mom asks her if she has her homework and reminds Payton that she will be attending parent–teacher conferences on Thursday. Payton asks her parents if she can go to a movie with her friends on Saturday night. Her parents agree that she can as long as her homework is done as school comes first, they remind her. Payton tells them that she will have her homework done. There is a knock at the door and Payton’s two best friends come in. They see what Payton is wearing and remind her that today is pajama day at school. Payton has forgotten and runs off to change before they leave for the bus. As Payton, her friends, and her brother walk out the door, her parents remind her of the family motto to “do one good deed each day.” As Payton walks toward the bus stop she starts thinking about what nice or helpful thing she will do for someone today. Qu es t ions 1. What would be an example of a microsystem influence on Payton’s development? A microsystem effect occurs when Peyton's close group of friends and her interaction with her friends on a daily basis would be an example of a microsystem effect. Peyton's interactions directly affect her social development, her peer relationships, and her emotional well-being 2. What would be an example of a mesosystem influence on Payton’s development? Meso-system influence is an example of interaction between Peyton's school and her family will occur. For example when Emma's reminder about parent-teacher conferences on Thursday shows us how the school and family systems interact. The communication between the teachers and parents at the conference will affect Peyton's academic progress and her overall well-being. 3. What would be an example of an exosystem influence on Payton’s development?
An exosystemic impact would occur when Peyton's life could be her father's town meeting that he mentions in the morning, but even though it's not directly related to Peyton, it could indirectly affect her family dynamic and also Peyton's dad's availability to help her in her art project. Changes in Peyton's father's schedule because of such meetings will affect routines and family dynamics, which in turn can affect Peyton's experiences and development. 4. What would be an example of a macrosystem influence on Payton’s development? A macro-system influence for Peyton would be the cultural emphasis on education and family values in her suburban community. The broader cultural context shapes expectations around academic achievement, community involvement, and family involvement can influence Peyton's development and behavior. In addition, the family motto of "do one good deed every day" introduces broader social values of kindness and altruism, which contribute to Peyton's moral and social development in the wider social contex
