Page | 2 Learner Workbook Activities Complete the following activities individually or in a group (as applicable to the specific activity and the assessment environment). Activity 1A Estimated Time 20 Minutes Objective To provide you with an opportunity to explain how to respect the person as the author, definer and director of their own recovery and recovery journey. Respecting the person as the author, definer, and leader of their own recovery journey means recognizing that the person seeking help for their mental health or substance use is the one who knows the most about their experience, needs, and goals. As a caretaker or supporter, it is important to put the person's independence first, give them the power to make their own decisions, and give them support that fits their needs and wants. One way to do this is by active listen to the other person's story without judging it or talking over it. This means giving them your full attention, letting them talk about how they feel and what they have been through, and letting them use their own words. By doing this, you can help them feel heard, validated, and understood, which can build trust and rapport. Collaboration on goals is another important way to respect a person's right to be independent. Work with the person to set goals for their recovery that are realistic and important to them. Do not try to force your own plans or goals on them. This means letting them figure out what they want to do and what is important to them and getting them to own their goals and produce plans to reach them. By doing this, you can encourage a sense of control, self-efficacy, and motivation. Respecting the person's autonomy also means giving them the power to make decisions. This means not making decisions for them or telling them what to do but giving them the information and support they need to make good decisions on their own. It also means respecting their choices, even if they are different from yours, and helping them weigh the pros and cons of different options. Building on strengths is another effective way to help people feel more independent and in charge of their lives. Instead of focusing only on the person's problems and flaws, it is important to find their strengths and build on them. This means helping them figure out what their strengths are and how to use them to get where they want to go. By doing this, you can help someone feel more confident, good about themselves, and proud of what they have done. When helping someone, it's important to treat them with respect and not make assumptions about them. This means not making assumptions about the person or trying to force your own beliefs or values on them. Instead, try to listen actively and with empathy and confirm how they feel and what they have been through. This can build trust and lay the

Page | 3 groundwork for a good relationship. Helping someone with things they need can also be a big help in their recovery. For example, offering to drive them to their appointments or watch their kids can help them get the care they need. In the same way, emotional support can help a person deal with the difficulties of their recovery journey. This could mean just being there and willing to listen, or it could mean giving resources and suggestions for other ways to get help, like support groups or therapy. When trying to get someone to be their own advocate, it is important to give them the tools they need to be involved in their own care. This could mean helping them figure out what their needs and goals are and helping them talk to their healthcare provider about them. It could also mean giving them information and resources to help them make decisions about their care that are best for them. Encouragement of self-advocacy can help people feel more confident and in control, which can be important for a successful recovery.

Page | 18 Activity 3E Estimated Time 20 Minutes Objective To provide you with an opportunity to identify factors which will help you to work within the context of the person’s experiences, understandings, and meanings and explain how to build a shared understanding of their needs. 1. Identify four factors which you should consider when looking at the context of the individual’s experiences for their mental health. - Environmental factors can also affect our mental health in the way they impact us psychologically. Your environment might raise or lower your stress levels, for instance. This can change your mental wellness overall, either serving to protect your psychological health or opening the door for mental illness to set in. -Every culture has a unique way of looking at mental health. For many, there is growing stigma around mental health, and mental health challenges are considered a weakness and something to hide. This can make it harder for those struggling to talk openly and ask for help. ---life purpose, individuals who have a keen sense of purpose and meaning in life tend to have better mental health, overall well-being, and cognitive functioning compared to those who lack a sense of purpose. - Experiencing a mental illness can add to financial stresses, and financial stresses can add to a mental illness. Financial safety can bring security and peace of mind. Combined with leisure time and fun activities, it can have a positive effect on wellbeing. Being able to work and pay bills regularly can ease pressure, though not everyone is able to do that. 1. Explain how you can build a shared understanding with the individual. Rapport is important because it allows us to connect and build relationships with others. It promotes connection with others on a personal level, and it helps establish comfortable living and working environments. Good rapport facilitates the development of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Make it a point to remember peoples’ names and faces, as this shows attentiveness and an interest in who they are. Remembering people builds trust, paving the way for open dialogue and effective communication. Relating to another person by identifying a shared experience, trait, or opinion is an effective way to find common ground. This type of empathy is a useful tool for connecting with another
Page | 19 individual, as it demonstrates an understanding of their feelings and past experiences. Asking questions can eliminate uncomfortable small talk and help you get into more meaningful conversations. Nonverbal cues and mannerisms body posture, eye contact, facial expressions. When someone is speaking to you, face them, make comfortable eye contact, and mirror their expressions as they speak. This shows that you are tuned in to their feelings. Page | 23 Activity 4D Estimated Time 20 Minutes Objective To provide you with an opportunity to identify why you should establish agreement with the person on roles and responsibilities for both the person and the worker, and document in accordance with organisation procedures. 1. Why should you establish agreement with the individual on the roles and responsibilities that you both have? Present your answer in 75 words. Accountability: When roles and responsibilities are established, it is easier to hold each other accountable for fulfilling their responsibilities. This promotes a sense of ownership and responsibility for the task at hand. Efficiency: Clearly defined roles and responsibilities can lead to increased efficiency and productivity, as each person knows what they are responsible for and can focus on completing their assigned tasks. Goal alignment: Establishing roles and responsibilities helps to ensure that both parties are working towards the same goals. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page and working towards a common objective. Conflict resolution: When roles and responsibilities are not clearly established, it can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. Having an agreement in place can help to prevent disagreements and can facilitate conflict resolution when issues do arise. 2. Explain why documentation should be made of the work that you do with the individual in their self-recovery. SOAP notes for mental health are an excellent way to document patient information clearly and concisely. It enables you to reduce administration time while allowing for a professional way to trace valuable medical information for current and future review. It also provides for other healthcare professionals and healthcare teams to quickly understand the overview of a patient's mental health situation. Page | 30 Reflective practices are methods and techniques that help individuals and groups reflect on their experiences and actions to engage in a process of continuous learning. Reflective practice enables recognition of the paradigms – assumptions, frameworks and patterns of thought and behaviour Reflective practice can help us understand our own intentions, values and visions and support us to work in a challenging field where our ethics and morals may be tested, where power relations may be decidedly unequal, and where we may be working in emotionally and physically demanding environment. Many of us keep coming back to fundamental questions: how can I make a difference in the world? What is “good change” and how do I contribute to it? How do we sustain ourselves and keep going, when the going gets rough? How can we position ourselves effectively within a change process, and avoid becoming part of the problem? Practicing reflection can help us answer these questions and others throughout our lives and careers. 8. Identify three techniques for communication and motivational interviewing and explain how they work to benefit the process. Reflective Listening, Reflection lets a client know that their therapist is listening and trying to understand their point of view.
