10-1 Discussion: Reflection How would you describe your experience of participating in this course? How has your experience shaped your intention of how to participate in future MBA courses? My experience with this course was incredibly enlightening. The leadership practices inventory by Kouzes and Posner helped me to become more self-aware by identifying my strengths and weaknesses, leading to a profound shift in how I approach my work and interact with others. This course provided me with the opportunity to reflect on my past and current leadership experiences, which I have been doing ever since my first digital marketing agency went belly up in 2018. It has reinvigorated my interest in self-directed work teams and implementing it in my new digital marketing agency. I have always considered leading by example to be very important. As my first MBA class in an online environment, the past ten weeks have been a revelation, showcasing the vast knowledge and information needed to thrive in an MBA course. My first experience in graduate level classes was in 1997 when I did them on campus in 16 weeklong semesters. Both those classes and this one is the same in that there was a lot of research and writing papers which is to be expected as a graduate student. I've learned some new, invaluable lessons about organizing my workload and engaging in deep discussions with my peers. What were some of the challenges you faced in this course, and how did these challenges help you prepare for challenges in today's VUCA world of work? How do you think future courses will help you deepen your ability to work in the VUCA world? Throughout the past ten weeks, my main hurdle has been finding enough time to complete all the required readings and papers. Each week brought new and challenging topics and assignments. However, I found solace in the fact that the final project was divided into
manageable milestones. By completing milestones one and two, as well as conducting research and creating a roll out and implementation plan for the communication strategy, I was able to make progress and complete the final project. The leadership topics covered in this course have provided me with valuable insights into navigating the ever-changing VUCA world we live in. Kouzes and Posner (2023) summed it up perfectly: "In this volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous VUCA world, visions are crucial for human survival and success, especially when times are calm, predictable, simple, and clear.” To become an exceptional leader, I recognize the importance of effective communication, leading by example, and being a valuable resource for my team members to succeed in their respective roles so they can do their jobs to the best of their ability that will contribute towards our vision. The fourth industrial revolution has introduced early advances on the internet of things; artificial intelligence (AI); and the production of smart equipment that can analyze, diagnose, and fix issues without the need for human intervention. How do these complex technological developments challenge leaders to adapt their leadership style and behavior? The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought technological progress that creates a new frontier for CEOs to adapt and maintain peak performance in the ever-changing economic landscape. This evolution of technology has created opportunities for entrepreneurs to start businesses in every industry, thus making them bloody oceans. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has created greater demands on businesses, necessitating the need for advanced technology and digital transformation. However, it is the rise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is bringing about a cause for concern. AI is now being considered an existential threat to humanity, and business leaders need to proceed with caution with this technology. AI can have many benefits, but it also poses significant threats to human existence.
The dangers of AI lie in its potential to surpass human intelligence and become sentient beings (Roy, 2023). While technology is supposed to make our lives easier, efficient, and more productive, it also creates new challenges for leaders in the 21st century. One of the most prominent challenges leaders will face is the need for digital knowledge and skill set. Leaders must now understand how technology works and how their workforce can utilize it to impact progress. To adapt to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, leaders will need to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the technologies they are using, their potential, their limitations, and how it all aligns with their business goals. As industries become increasingly bloodier oceans, leaders will need a flexible leadership style that allows their business to be more agile in the short-term, while staying focused on their long-term vision. This means that business leaders will need to invest in technology that will automate redundant tasks like data entry and other admin activities. This will allow employees who are increasingly becoming a part of self-directed work teams (i.e. high performing work systems) to concentrate on creativity and decision making. In this type of business environment, employees must get the training in these new skills that will help their organization achieve their vision while at the same time gaining a sense of ownership in their jobs (Roy, 2023). Considering those challenges, what do you want to learn to help prepare you to lead more effectively? How will your future work in this program benefit you and the people you lead? not happen again. I am committed to sharpening my leadership skills and most importantly my decision-making capabilities to become a better entrepreneur. This class has provided valuable guidance on areas I need to focus on to become a better leader. It has given me new insight on how to approach communication.
