Serna 1 Fernanda Serna Biopsychology Laboratory-Touch Lab 1. What is the independent variable (IV)? The independent variable is the individual being tested. They stay the same and the prong changes or depends on how their touch receptors react to the prongs. 2. What is the dependent variable (DV)? The dependent variable is the prongs. Their distance apart depends on the individual, also known as the independent variable. 3. What is your hypothesis about the relationship between the IV and the DV. My hypothesis about the relationship between the Independent variable and the dependent variable is that the results rely on each other. In every experiment there needs to be an independent and dependent variable in order to come to a correct observation. The Prongs being the dependent variable, only change in distance when the person, or independent variable, does not feel two pokes. 4. Looking at your results, where on the body can the 2 prongs be detected with the smallest distance of separation? Where on the body requires the largest distance of separation? Looking at my results, the body part in which one can detect the two prongs with the smallest distance would have to be the tip of the index finger. The data gathered by all the students creates a mean of 3 mm. That is by far the shortest distance that has been able to detect the two prongs. According to my data, the forearm was the body part that took the longest distance to feel the two prongs. The data shows that the mean calculated is about 11.4 mm
Serna 2 5 . Looking at your results, which body part had the largest variation across participants (i.e., standard deviation)? According to my results, the body part that had the largest variation across participants was the cheek. The numbers ranged from 1 to 20, which is the highest and lowest calculations out of all the body parts that were tested. 6. Was there a significant correlation between the IV and DV? Was it a positive or negative correlation? What does the correlation mean - describe in words? Yes there was a significant correlation between the independent and dependent variables. It was a negative correlation. In this instance the correlation means that the bigger the distance between the prongs got, the more tries it took the participants to feel two pokes. This means that the correlation is negative because you want less tries. 7. Did the results change when you added data from previous sections? If so, why might that happen? Yes the results changed when all the data was combined. You could see the variety in results. This happens because everyone's body is different. The human skin contains touch receptors that react differently for everyone. 8. What do you conclude about your experiment? Was your hypothesis supported? The mechanoreceptors, also known as the touch receptors, react differently to everyone. For some its more sensitive making them feel the two pokes. However, for others it might take longer. Yes this supports my hypothesis as the Prongs being the dependent variable and the participants being the dependent variable.
