RSV: Topic 11 What type of virus have you chosen (DNA or RNA)? If RNA, is the strand + or -? Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV can be described as a common respiratory virus impacting vulnerable populations (i.e. infants and elderly) (CDC, 2022). RSV is a negative-strand RNA virus to the family paramyxoviridae. Is your virus single stranded or double stranded? RSV is considered a single-strand; negative sense linear RNA. What species does the virus infect? Originally, RSV was first discovered in chimpanzees which led to accidentally infecting humans. What are the life-cycle stages of the virus? Generally RSV is asymptomatic to older children and adults. In small children such as infants or older adults RSV symptoms appear about 2 to 5 days after contact with the virus. What disease does your virus cause? RSV can commonly cause other diseases such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia (CDC, 2022). While one causes inflammation of the small airways in the lungs the other is an infection of the lungs (CDC, 2022). I chose this virus because it would greatly impact my family; especially if my child were to catch RSV. In the United States, RSV-associated deaths among children under 5 years of age are estimated at 100-500 per year (CDC, 2019). Reference Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (2019).
