FROM EGGS TO ITCHY NIGHTS: UNRAVELING THE MYSTERIOUS LIFECYCLE OF PINWORMS Hassan Cole BIOL202 American Public University System
Rationale PARASITES I chose this topic because I will soon send my daughter to daycare or childcare. I want to learn and do some research about this parasite and how to prevent infection. This is important because some people may not even know the risks or cure of this parasite. I would like to shed some light on the situation, and why worms are a common occurrence with children in close proximity to one another. Also, this will be interesting to talk about. Learning how to protect yourself and your children from this highly invasive parasite. 2
Background This helminth is more common in children than adults (AL-kafaji, 2022). About 200 million people worldwide are infected every year (AL-kafaji, 2022). The lifecycle of this helminth is in three stages. Egg, larva, adult (AL- kafaji, 2022). Pinworms are one of the most infectious parasites in daycares around the world (Tuokko & Kaur, 2018). Children are more likely to become ill around other children in a group setting (Tuokko & Kaur, 2018). PARASITES 3

Hypothesis Children are less likely to contract a pinworm infection at home compared to when they attend daycare. HYPOTHESIS 4
Materials Participants between 18 to 36 month olds Consent Forms for the Experiment Questionnaire form for parents and daycare workers Surface samples from home and daycare Microscope, slides, visible eye, gloves 1-inch strip of cellophane tape Antimicrobial soap since hand sanitizers have limited effectiveness against pinworm eggs Container for slide and tape storage $500 gift card PRESENTATION TITLE 5
Methods Identify children who are in daycare and stay at home via a survey Obtain consent to conduct an experiment Obtain health records of parents, daycare workers, and children since this will be a blind survey. A minimum of 100 children in this sample, 50 daycare, 50 stay-at-home Perform Eterobius Test: Before experiments, clean your hands thoroughly Apply gloves to avoid cross-contamination Attach cellophane tape to the anus and attach the microscope slide Insert slide into a secure container, labeled. Turn into the experiment center. Receive a $500 gift card for participation If there are positive results of helminths, please notify the pediatrician. PRESENTATION TITLE 6

Expected Data Slide data collected from daycare children and stay-at-home children will vary greatly. When all samples come in, there will be a disproportionate level of helminth infections between daycare children and stay-at-home children. Variable data must be analyzed in the statistics, such as the child’s siblings in the household and time out of the house, such as at the park or playground, which will be asked in the questionnaire. 7
Data 8 (Sample Pinworm head n.d.) The photo to the left depicts an adult female pinworm in the intestines of a child
9 (Sample Pinworm Eggs n.d.) Data cont. These are the current pinworm eggs found in most daycare children. Results show that in the questionnaire, the daycare setting was infested with pinworm eggs on the surfaces of toys, counters, and bedding stations

Data cont. 10 Daycare At-home Positive Results 75% 25% Negative Results 25% 75% 18m-24m old 10% 0% 24m-36m old 90% 100% his is a data sheet of all of the results of the children that have tested positive or negative in the experimen
Conclusion Helminths and pinworms are more prevalent in daycare children than stay at home children. The age group that was affected the most was 2 to 3-year-olds. stay-at-home Children mostly affected were kids who played outside in the park and did not wash their hands after playtime ( Pinworms- Nemours KidsHealth , n.d.) Proper handwashing and sanitization techniques prove to be useful in keeping pinworm infections down ( Pinworms-Nemours KidsHealth , n.d.) 11
