Fname Lname BIO 101 Assignment 1: Each of the following responses must be a minimum of a paragraph. They can all be on the same document. Please let me know if you have questions. Chapter 2- Select a sport. Explain how you would develop a nutrition plan for an athlete participating in that sport. The sport I selected is long distance running, as that is seemed to be the most relevant for me. At the most general, I would start by considering the gender, age, level of activity, and health status of the athlete in order to determine their recommended daily allowance. For example, women would need slightly fewer calories than men, and a slightly less active or less skilled runner might not need as many calories as say a very active or elite runner. When making meal plans, I would keep in mind the concepts of balance, variety, and moderation; it would get tiring to have to eat the same thing every day, or too much of a single food. For the nutrition plan, I would ensure they get adequate carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water, as well as any non-essential nutrients I feel may increase performance (e.g., creatine via food or supplementation). I believe the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for this type of athlete should favor consumption of nutrient-rich carbohydrates (up to 65% total energy), but adequate fat and protein consumption is important as well. Lastly, the nutrition plan should take into account the timing of the competition in order to ensure carbohydrate loading and pre-competition meal(s).

Chapter 3- Explain how you would determine energy expenditure for an athlete. Physical activity can be measured through questionnaires, heart rate monitoring, and exercise equipment that may factor in data from the user such as age and body weight. Heart rate monitoring in combination with oxygen monitoring may also be able to help determine energy expenditure. Energy expenditure can be predicted by exercise machines using personal data in combination with feedback from the machine. The indirect calorimetry method calculates energy expenditure by measuring the consumption of oxygen and production of carbon dioxide during exercise. The Doubly Layered Water technique is considered to be the best method for measuring energy expenditure in any environment. Various motion sensors, accelerometers, pedometers, and smartphone applications can also be used to estimate energy expenditure. Source: Rawson, Eric S., et al.
