Name: ___________Alexia Gutierrez_____________ BIOL 2041 Microbiology (Fall 2023) Module 18 Worksheet – Bad Blood Case Study Questions: 1. When the experiment in Macon County was proposed, what other previous experiment was given as a model? What did the researchers hope to show? In what major ways did the experiment in Macon County differ from the previous study? Another experiment was conducted in Oslo, Norway where data was gathered from the population of both white males and females in regards to the progression of the disease, in hopes to demonstrate the biological differences between the population of African American and non- African American of how syphilis progressed overtime without treatment. The Macon County study was used to determine the percentage of the population that had syphilis based on blood samples, however under the assumption that syphilis came from African Americans rather than from both races, they assumed that African Americans who had syphilis had different side effects in comparison to the whites, however studies shown how syphilis can affect any sort of population/people. 2. At the beginning of the study, what types of treatments were available for syphilis and what other treatments became available during the study? Was there discussion by the researchers about giving these treatments to the study subjects? Different groups had different motives pertaining to type of study they were conducting in regards to treating syphilis, such as the PHS (the public health service) maintain the disease under control in the south were most of the African American population have not seen or been treated by a doctor a day in their life. Using this knowledge to their advantage the PHS wanted to treat this population located in the south and study their progression overtime with the disease, where as the Tuskegee study their motive was to find different methods to treat against the disease itself, where several physicians/nurses learned about syphilis to develop a treatment/cure for those infected. However during the Macon County study, several physicians involved saw those who were infected as study objects rather than victims of the disease. Over the years, through the progression of this study there has been a controversy that several African Americans who has syphilis were not being treated to its full extent, even the nurse rivers motives prevented men involved in the study from receiving nay form of treatment form the PHS, knowing that the drugs/treatments would have side effects she saw them more as victims, “ this is the way I saw it…. Just like they were studying the white man, see making a comparison” ( Bad Blood case study pg 5) 3. In your opinion, what are the ethical concerns related to this study? Based on my moral views, as someone who is pursuing a career in the medical field, this study specifically is very unethical in the form of that the study itself was used to study the progression
of the disease itself in the aspect of how it affected those who were infected, rather than using the study to help develop drug induced therapies to prevent the disease from spreading and curing those who were infected. When it comes to any from of medicinal or pharmaceutical technique to treating any form or illness the first ethical concern to take into consideration is safety of the individual/population, in this case this study did exactly the opposite. The use of humans as testing subjects to observe and gather data is violating that ethical concern putting those at risk in danger and those who are not at greater risk to becoming infected. 4. What concerns were raised during the project and by whom? What event finally caused the project to be halted? Peter Buxtin a PHS venereal disease and interviewer/investigator expressed his moral concerns towards this study, regarding how the physicians and nurses treating these people were not of African American descent, not to mention how they were not trained in medical ethics, as time progressed Peter Buxtin left PHS for law school, and being still bothered by this study with no change in how they were running it, contacted associated press, where Jean Heller a reporter, did extensive research and broke the news to the public. 5. In what year were guidelines on human experimentation first established by the Public Health Service? Why do you think these guidelines were ignored in relation to the Tuskegee study? The guidelines were first established in 1974, reason as to why these were ignored specifically by the Tuskegee study, is for the fact that they wanted to observe the progression of syphilis in induvial that were untreated, to gather data and observations for their own matter, rather than viewing them as patients they were more looked upon as test subjects for their own study.
