Lesson Plan TEKS :(12) Organisms and environments. The student knows that living organisms have basic needs that must be met through interactions within their environment. The student is expected to: (B) create and describe food chains identifying producers and consumers to demonstrate how animals depend on other living things; Objectives: The learner will be able to identify and describe parts of the food chain: producers and consumers. The learner will be able to create a food web accurately demonstrating their knowledge of food chains. Prerequisite Skills: Identify and illustrate how living organisms depend on each other through food chains. Materials/Set-up: Computers, Poster paper, glue, scissors, colored pencils, crayons, markers, construction paper, and Website: https://www.cserc.org/sierra-fun/games/build-a-food-chain-game/ Instruction: 1. Begin the lesson by asking students what they remember about food chains. Next ask students to draw what they think a food chain looks like. 2. Discuss with students how important food chains are for the environment. Make a list on the board of the food chains major parts, the sun, producers, and consumers. Have students provide examples of producers and consumers. 3. Watch short video to further explain food chains to students: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=MuKs9o1s8h8&t=27s 4. The teacher will model making a food chain diagram with arrows, starting with the sun, and ending with the animal at the top of the food chain. 5. Next, put students into groups or partners and have them look up on the computer organisms that would be producers and consumers. Give students roles in the group so they have a certain task to complete in the group. 6. The teacher will then provide them with poster paper, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and construction paper so the group can create their own food chain. 7. Finally, once students have finished creating their food chains, they will share their diagrams and have them explain which organisms are the producers and which are the consumers. Closure: Provide students the link of a food chain game: https://www.cserc.org/sierra-fun/games/build-a-food- chain-game/ Have students complete the game and the teacher should be monitoring the students in case they need further help with food chains. Assessment: While students are working on the food chain game, the teacher should be monitoring the students and making sure that they are choosing the correct answers. If students are struggling the teacher should provide further assistance and explain the parts of the food chain and what a food chain includes. Accommodations/Modifications/Extensions: One-on-one instruction with the teacher Use visual materials. Have materials read-aloud to the student. Have a partner that can help the student.
