Caitlin Guevara Professor Brasel EEC 4661 October 31, 2023 Introduction to Early Childhood Education Chapter 15: Guiding Routines and Group Activities 1. I made a connection o “When they are dropped off at school, children are not always ready for their parents to leave. Particularly for a child who is new to the school, a gentle and gradual transition is important.” - I’ve seen multiple occasions where parents try to trick their child or try to drop off their child and get out of the classroom as fast as possible so that the child won't be upset, but I feel like this does more harm than good. 2. This part is confusing, this part is important o “In planning meals for young children, it is important to include a variety of healthy foods, take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables, and keep foods tasty but simple.” - This part is important because it highlights the need for children to eat healthy foods and start those good habits while they're young, but what needs to be put in place so that the teachers aren't feeding the children things the parents don’t want them to eat? 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! Part
o “Child-sized bathroom fixtures facilitate independent self-help skills. Learning about going to the toilet and washing hands is easier for young children because the toilets and sinks are just the right size for them.” 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) o “Misnourishment” - Children do not eat the right kinds of foods needed for healthy development but overeat the wrong kinds of foods. 5. I inferred from what is written here o “For other children, falling asleep represents a letting go, where anxieties and fears can surface, and their sleep reluctance comes from a need to avoid such scary thoughts.” - What I inferred from this section of the text is that creating a welcoming and safe environment for the children may help with their sleeping troubles or having them explain why they might be scared to sleep and planning with them to face their fears. Chapter 16: Guiding Social Behaviors 1. I made a connection o “Thoughtful and respectful guidance practices result in children who are socially competent and responsible.” - By modeling this behavior to children, it can help them learn the behavior and be able to do it themselves. 2. This part is confusing, this part is important o "There are additional risks for children who are physically punished. Frequent and severe punishment is strongly associated with children’s mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, general
maladjustment, and high levels of stress. Physically punished children also tend to have poor relations with their parents, which interferes with the development of trust and attachment.” - This part of the text is important because it discusses the many negatives of physical punishment, and how that outweighs the possible short-term benefits. 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! Part o “Positive reinforcement, whether it comes in the form of a hug, a smile, or a thank-you, is an effective way to encourage children to continue desirable behaviors.” 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) o “Democratic life skills” - The social–emotional abilities that children need to develop in order to become productive participants in a diverse society. 5. I inferred from what is written here o “Reflection and self-understanding are very important in working with young children; if you acknowledge your strengths and identify areas you might want to change, you will emerge with a more solid foundation.” - Being self- aware and being able to complete self-reflection can make or break your career as an early childhood educator. Especially based on your life views and moral values.
