Background information (provided from Canvas): - The size of the entrance hole determines which species can fit inside the birdhouse. - Each species of bird builds very stereotypical nests, so they may not nest inside a box that is too large or too small. - Squirrels and other organisms can act as nest predators, eating the eggs or baby birds. Different birdhouse placement or design may influence whether predators can find and get inside a birdhouse. - The temperature inside a birdhouse is important to the survival of the birds/eggs inside, and can be affected by the placement and construction of the birdhouse. 1) What is your research question? Do predators have an effect on Wren birds occupying their nests? 1) What are your hypotheses (null and alternative)? If Wren nests are exposed to their predators, then their predators will force Wrens from their nest. Null: Wren nests that are not exposed to their predators will be occupied. Alternative: Wren nests that are slightly exposed to their predators will be occupied. 2) What are your experimental variables? Be sure to specify which variables are independent and which are dependent. Are each of your variables qualitative or quantitative? (Minimum: 2 variables) Independent variable: predators (quantitative) Dependent variable: nest Qualitative: color and size of the nest Quantitative: number of predators, number of birds in nests, number of nests being tested
4) Describe your experimental set-up: (Minimum for description: 5-6 sentences) · What will you do? I will place 3 different Wren birdhouses in my back yard at different height levels and locations to see if their nests attract predators. The different location areas will test to see if Wren predators are attracted to certain nest styles that are at certain levels. With the nests at different levels, I will be able to specify which predator is “attacking” or approaching which nest, and what the predators preference is. · Where will your experiment be conducted? In my back yard. · What are your treatment groups (you should have at least three, but can have as many as you need to adequately address your question)? Are any of these groups a control group, and if so, which one? One nest will be in a tree hole that is made with sticks and grass. Second nest will be in a bush that is made with a shoe box. Third nest will be on a tree branch that is made with twigs. The first nest is the control group because it’s made like an ordinary Wren nest and it’s located in a common place Wrens habitat. · What factors will you hold constant? All Wren nests have the same dimensions, using the same bird species (Wren), and all nests are exposed to the same amount of sunlight and shade.
