Religion as Our Nation’s Foundational Principles PLST 205-C01 Kaydyn Perea Professor McCarrick October 17, 2021
Religion as Our Nation’s Foundational Principles One of the strongest supporters of God’s influence on the United States Constitution was by far Thomas Jefferson. He knew that while in other countries God’s wisdom was deemed incompatible with good government, he knew that our government proved that statement wrong, Mark A. Beliles & Douglas S. Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 32 (2005). While he believed God had major impacts on the creation of our government, him along with many of our other founding fathers knew if they didn’t create a separation between church and state, a national church could possibly be created in the future, Mark A. Beliles & Douglas S. Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 32 (2005). This was something many were not fond of in light of the previous breaking from England’s grasp, which made sense because England did in fact have an established national church. However, with this idea kept in mind, Thomas Jefferson was an avid supporter of God’s wisdom in the creation of our government. In fact, he drafted five bills that were all religious in nature. One of them being a bill to punish those who did not attend church on Sunday’s, such as those who chose to be working rather than at church. He proposed that they be fined 10 shillings for every offense, aka the currency at the time. Although many historians believe this to be based around an Enlightenment of Thomas Jefferson, it was in fact based upon the Bible’s fourth commandment to respect the Sabbath and keep it wholly, Mark A. Beliles & Douglas S. Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 32 (2005). This was one of many of Thomas Jefferson’s support for the Biblical Basis in law. Take what the bible says in Matthew, “For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them” Matthew 18:20 (English Version). This verse shows that church can be a small or big gathering and that’s all Jefferson hoped for, that his people may find God, while
maybe not necessarily in his religion at his church but gathered with likeminded people for the same purpose of hearing God’s word.
