Analyzing Video Editorial
How is the piece's conclusion supported with sufficient arguments or factual evidence?
This video is based on a man named Wade who plays first-person video games and
sensitive discussions pertaining to his addiction to playing video games and his mental health.
The factual evidence is A&E did a documentary about digital addiction and the dramatic impact
it had on Wade playing for 13 hours a day. An expert on digital addictions also assessed him
during the filming process. It affected Wade so much that he could not keep a job but his gaming
addiction has kept him from supporting himself and using his talent to support his normal
lifestyle.
Use concrete examples from the article (quotes) to evaluate its quality.
Wade’s dad said “When Wade was young, he was very artistic. He was drawing at a super
young age but he was kind of standoffish introverted.”
Wade’s dad said, “Wade is suffering
from game addiction and I think is keeping him from getting anywhere”.
Slyvia (Wade’s Friend)
said “I’ve known Wade for seven years and he’s always played video games but not to the point
where he is now”. Wade said, “The gaming addiction I believe it’s not really affecting me
negatively it only affecting me as far as keeping my brain from being too idle. Video games
actually enhance my problem-solving abilities.”
What are the implications of the ideas of the author?
Wade’s implications are “Now he is tired and wore out of being rejected and so he tried to
escape from the stresses of everyday life.” He was rejected so much that it caused him to retreat
and give up instead of trying to find a resolution. When Wade met with a digital addiction expert
his opinion his implication is that “Wade’s addiction behavior is a problem because there’s really
not much going on in his life other than video gaming. He really stuck.” He isolated himself
from everyone and everything and is living in the video game world instead of reality.
Reflect on what could be the consequences of the ideas presented by the author. Evaluate
the author’s perspective using sufficient supporting evidence. (what are the consequences if
the author is correct in their statements?)
The consequences for Wade’s dad and his friends waiting too long to get him help but
they are correct for getting him help. Wade’s mental health is at risk because he plays the game
13 hours a day and he has no social interaction with the outside world. Since their statements are
true about what has been going on in Wade’s life after losing his last job, his coping skills ended
up relying on his gaming time instead of getting back to the labor market for work. The expert
had Wade detox and give up all video games and inter
What do you think are the author’s influences?
Reflect on what lines of thought, contexts, or assumptions can influence the ideas presented
in the editorial. (how objective or biased is the author, and why?)
Wade, his influence was setbacks and goals that he hoped to accomplish but video
gaming became his way to cope with what was going on in his life. His personal life experiences
of being rejected from finding a job, and having constant contact with friends and family have
pushed him back into playing video games to the point of avoiding the stress instead of dealing
with it. He is biased because he has a more positive view of playing video games and he
downplays the negative effects by enjoying gaming and it's a significant part of their life. Wade
said, “The gaming addiction I believe it’s not really affecting me negatively it only affecting me
as far as keeping my brain from being too idle.” This is the perfect example of him downplaying
the negative effects. He does not understand that playing 13 hours out of 24 hours a day is not
good and is very unhealthy for him. Essentially his video gaming has become more important to
him because he has a $7000 rent debt and has not worked since the covid pandemic. He is not
being objective at this point.
Finally, include your analysis of their opinion on the topic
Consider the issue's complexity and present your own arguments in support or contrast
with the position of the author of the article. Reflect on what lines of thought, contexts, or
assumptions can influence your own ideas.
My opinion is that I am happy he acknowledges the problem that he has but now he
needs to continue getting help and start setting goals to get back out there.
I believe since he
took that first step now, he needs to set boundaries on how long he can play to start reducing the
amount of time he plays. The next step would be for Wade to find other activities to take up his
time to keep him occupied and then step three is to talk to his support system when he is
struggling including a therapist. Wade would need to start looking for a job to help him reduce
his rent debt so that he can continue to have shelter but also give him financial stability and a
purpose every day so he can stay positive the last thing is self-care since he has not really given
his self the time with exercise, healthy eating habits and good sleep for his mental health.
