Introduction
Youth ministry has often been looked at as a steppingstone into other ministries. It is hard
to go to a conference with other church leaders, as a Youth Pastor, and be asked repeatedly what
the goal is. As if the goal is not to be a youth pastor. However, many youth leaders understand
that the goal is not about the leader, but rather about the development of the students that they are
ministering to. It is for that reason that websites like “Just A Phase” exist. They exist to aid in the
nurturing and growth of youths that are growing up in the faith. There are so many websites
made to help with this. So, with so many websites out there, how does a youth leader know that
the source is reliable? To find that answer, one would need to dig in, figure out the main idea and
goal, and then make sure that the website is truly biblical. Just A Phase is an awesome website
for youth leaders, and here is why.
Summary
Just A Phase
is a website that is designed to aid parents, youth leaders, and teachers in
their walk with youth. Specifically,
Just A Phase
was created as “a collaborative, ongoing, effort
assembling classic and innovative research, with practical application.”
1
All of this is with the
understanding that it is a faith-based website. The idea of the name of the website is that all
children spend different parts of their lives going through phases. Two people named Kristen Ivy
and Reggie Joiner created the website to show leaders of all sorts the different stages of life that
children go through. They did this “So adults don’t miss what’s happening during the critical
phases of growing up.”
2
After searching through the website a little bit, one can find out that they
have split up the phases of life into 4 main phases. Those main phases are Preschool, Elementary,
Middle school, and High school. In each stage, the website has blogs and articles to help leaders

and parents understand what their child is going through. A lot of the website is based around
scientific evidence of the average student during those phases of life.
Just A Phase
shows just
how complicated, yet awesome kids are.
Personal Response
This website is an awesome tool for parents and youth leaders. Really for anyone that is
involved in raising youth in their walks with Christ. I am a youth Pastor Intern and something
that really affected me while reading through a blog on the website was just how encouraging the
post was. I am somebody who really struggles with being too hard on myself. The first blog that
I saw when opening up the website was one about leading better. They gave bunch of ideas of
how to lead better and then at the end I read these words. “Did any of these ideas surprise you?
Probably not. Do you know why? Because you’re already a good leader.”
3
The website surely
does a good job at encouraging leaders and parents. One idea that will help me to be a better
leader was the encouragement to keep learning. I was reminded that I won’t know all of the
answers but that is the same for the experts. “Experts become experts because they kept
learning.”
4
This taught me that I need to keep learning myself if I want to be a better leader for
the youth in the youth group I lead. The website has a lot of facts and a lot of helpful tips.
Another section I read through was about the needs of a toddler. It may have been nice to have a
little more bible references to back up the ways to embrace a toddler, but it was encouraging to
see how people get through the struggle of raising a toddler. My favorite encouragement from
this part and something that I want to portray in my own life is this; “Portray God the Father as

you extend patience, love and grace.”

With this in mind, the theme of raising a child is rock
solid. We do everything to glorify God and raising children should be no different. This website
was an awesome encouragement for me personally.
Conclusion
Just A Phase
exists to encourage. The website does just that. I would recommend using
the website and I know that I will continue to use it in the future! One change that I would love
to see happen is that I believe the writers would benefit from using bible verses a little bit more.
The theme is right, but giving God all the Glory would be just one more encouragement for the
readers. Overall,
Just A Phase
is a win!
