Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic illness that has affected many individuals around the world. The illness occurs when blood sugar levels are above the normal level. There are many key factors and causes to why diabetes is contracted within individuals' bodies. This could include unhealthy
eating habits, obesity, genetics, or psychological causes like stress. There are three main types of Diabetes which are type 1,2 and gestational diabetes which occurs while pregnant. It is important
to be knowledgeable of the types of diabetes to help prevent and establish a plan to treat the long-term illness. Some individuals are more at risk than others because of the different daily habits everyone has. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it states, “With diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.” (CDC 2023, pg. 1). This helps explain how diabetes interferes with the
immune system in the body and how contracting it may not have the best effects for the human body in the future due to the high risks of other chronic illnesses. The plan to prevent chronic illness will positively influence many individuals and potentially decrease the number of people with prediabetic risks. Background of the community/culture/subculture as it relates to history.
The Hispanic/Latino community with the background race of Mexicans is one of the largest racial groups in the country. In the traditional familistic culture, Hispanic individuals are especially righteous about traditions and having specific norms to be followed. This historical factor of traditions and low-income background is important to the preventative plan of how the chronic illness, diabetes can be contracted. The Hispanic community is commonly known to be 2
low-income class which is important to consider when explaining how this community is mostly affected by the Chronic illness. This is a negative attribute on Hispanic individuals mainly living in low-income communities, who do not have much access to healthy food grocery stores, which
are defined as food deserts. This potentially leads to eating more unhealthy affordable food and consuming big portions of unhealthy food causes diabetes within generations. The positive effect
on health care in low-income Hispanic communities involves the fact that the government is willing to provide health care to poverty communities and give access to medical care. The negative effects on health care in low-income Hispanic communities are the lack of quality in health care for low-income communities. This is an important community to apply for a prevention program because according to the Mayo Clinic it states, “Hispanics include people from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South and Central America. The CDC says Hispanics living in the U.S. are 17% more likely to have Type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic white people.” (Balzer, 2022, pg. 1). This explains how Hispanics are at greater risk of getting diabetes because of their daily habits. It is important to implement a plan in the Hispanic community because it can help with providing affordable methods to help with the problems of potentially acquiring the chronic illness. This is critical to the prevention because individuals will likely acquire new positive ways to make sure the quality of life is extended. Describe several components of the plan. Using research and psychological principles/theories to support your plan, explain how you would make this plan successful.
Several components of the preventative plan would be to add more organic grocery stores
around the low-income communities, and parks to help with keeping the community physically active on the daily. The research principle of ethics will help communities make decisions about making positive impacts on the Hispanic community. According to the article Health Food 3

Access in Low-Income High-Minority Communities: A Longitudinal Assessment
it states, “Hispanic communities had a higher prevalence of small groceries and convenience stores. This higher prevalence of smaller stores, coupled with shopping practices of Hispanic consumers, suggests that efforts to upgrade smaller stores in Hispanic communities may be more sustainable.” (Ohri-Vachaspati, 2019, pg. 1). This explains how the Hispanic community has more access to small convenience stores other than bigger more varied grocery stores and how it can be a great addition to the community. The plan to include more parks will positively affect the factors described for the Hispanic community because it is important to apply a green environment in a low-income community that will encourage individuals to include physical activity in their daily routines. According to the CDC, it states, “People who have more access to green environments, such as parks and trails, tend to walk and be more physically active than those with limited access. The closer people live to a park and the safer they feel in the park, the more likely they are to walk or bike to those places and use the park for physical activity.” (CDC,
2022, pg. 1). This explains how a plan to incorporate a park into low-income properties motivates individuals to use the park often. The plan to promote this plan would be to have community meetings and hand out information about new openings of healthier options for the Hispanic community. This could be an informational meeting to explain the negative effects of contributing to diabetes and promote ways to prevent it. Doing any physical activities at least three times a week can ultimately lead to a healthier lifestyle and prevent any chronic illness, like
diabetes. Explain any obstacles that might get in the way of implementing your plan, and how you
would overcome these obstacles. 4
Any obstacles that might get in the way of implementing the plan are the fact that individuals in low-income communities choose not to purchase organic food from accessible grocery stores because individuals might want to choose a cheaper option. The Hispanic community can misuse the parks and not have the proper maintenance which could potentially lead to fewer people attending the parks because of either safety or cleanliness. How I could overcome these obstacles is by making sure the organic grocery stores are always getting promoted and encouraging individuals to attend as a way to bond as a community. Keeping the parks clean and well-maintained will also make sure individuals feel motivated to attend a nice environment for physical activity. 5
