Two majors
Do you ever think about how much pressure college students feel when thinking about their future? Many people don’t realize the hardships students go through and struggle to decide what major is the best option for their future. Comparing and contrasting the majors Criminal Justice and Business is important to be knowledgeable of because it will help make proper decisions regarding students’ careers. Based on a comparison of Parental/Family Preferences, Job
Opportunities, and Required Courses for Criminal Justice and Business, students who are unsure of how to choose a major should know they have many career options in the future regardless of what it takes to be successful.
Parental/Family Preferences
Criminal Justice and Business students both have different educational experiences for parental/family preferences, so they should choose what major they desire. My thoughts about this criterion are that Parents are not as encouraged to go into law enforcement due to being in unsafe situations. According to the author Butterbaugh, it states, “Undoubtedly, a large measure of success is tied to monetary success. Several scholarly articles analyze the effect of economic wealth on a student’s career choices as well as the intergenerational effects of familial wealth.” (Butterbaugh,2012, pg. 4) Students who come from a rich family have a bigger advantage of choosing careers that are similar. (Butterbaugh, 2012, pg. 4). This shows a contrast between money and genuine interest in the major chosen by the student. My thoughts about this criterion are that family encourages and supports this major because it relates to having more opportunities after graduating. “Parents’ higher education is positively linked to the choice of a humanities or an economic major, but negatively linked to the choice of a humanities major it is not important whether one or both of the parents has a higher education.” (Kuz’mina 2014, 2
pg.57) The student’s choice in major is correlated to their parent’s past educational experience. (Kuz’mina, 2014, pg.57). This explains how a parent can make great examples to younger generations and influence different majors. This helps explain the significance of the comparing from both major because it states the importance of a parents past educational experience not being an overall factor to what students may consider. Following the similarities of the major in regard to parental/family preferences, pressure by the preferences is a big factor to what college students choose.
Job Opportunities
Criminal Justice and Business students both have a different amount of Job opportunities so, they should make sure to choose what will lead to job satisfaction. This major has many job opportunities including law enforcement, private investigator, and paralegal. According to the article “
The Direct and Indirect Effects of Family Factors on the choice of a college major
.” It states, “The influence of family characteristics when choosing a profession is manifested both in the process of making the decision to obtain a higher education and in the process of choosing a specific professional field.” (Kuz’mina, 2014, pg.54) The motivation behind a chosen major is based on what the job will be after completing it. This indicates how considering being knowledgeable and researching of the major’s career options before choosing to pursue them is important to students. This major has many job opportunities including human resources, auditor,
and business owner. “The probability of having a job is not as important when picking a major. We found that a 1% increase in the probability of employment only increase the probability of choosing a broad major by about 0.4%, and this increase is often not statistically significant.” (Marinescu et al, 2017, pg. 1) Student don’t necessarily consider the jobs connected to the major.

students because jobs can be found within other requirements. This stated quote helps explain the
importance of considering all job opportunities because it will help establish positive outcomes for student’s future after college when choosing a broader major. Considering that both criminal justice and business majors are broad, it indicates the similarities of the majors and can potentially have around the same amount of job opportunities. Required Courses
Criminal Justice and Business students both have different processes of required courses to take so, they should prioritize what can help them succeed. The required courses for Criminal Justice majors include law enforcement, ethics classes, and criminology and victimology. According to the GCU website, it states, “University Foundations, effective communications, Christian worldview, critical thinking, and global awareness, perspective and Ethics.” (GCU, 2023, pg. 1) The university requires competency classes to be taken as a criminal justice major. (GCU, 2023, pg.1) This includes the expected required classes to be applied as a Justice studies major student. The required courses for business majors include business management, and marketing. According to the GCU website, it states, “University Foundations, effective communications, Christian worldview, critical thinking, and global awareness, perspective and Ethics.” (GCU, 2023, pg. 1) Some courses under the competency courses include computer skills, economics, and ethical classes. (GCU, 2023, pg. 1) This explains the basic elements to what is necessary to accomplish as business major at GCU. This is important to consider because
it includes the similarity of the overall required courses students need to take for either Criminal justice or business majors. Depending on what career jobs a student is looking for, a broad major like criminal justice and business will definitely be possible to begin after graduation from a four-year university. 4
Conclusion
In conclusion, comparing and contrasting the majors through different criteria will help individuals with deciding on career options. Students should prioritize what aspects of themselves are good and make sure their interests correlate with their majors. If students do not adhere to their interests, it can result in not being fully satisfied with their future plans. The major
Criminal Justice is better than the major business because the criteria showed an overall better outcome for job opportunities, family preferences, and required courses. It is important to make sure college students do not get pressured into choosing their majors for the wrong reasons. College students should choose a major based on their own preferences and aspirations. 5
