1.
Identify either a plea reform or bail reform program.
a.
The Center for Justice Innovation
b.
The Center for Justice Innovation “implements bail reform strategies to reduce the use of
jail and increase the fairness of the justice system.” (Harkins, 2022, pg.1)
c.
The areas that the reform program focuses on are rethinking incarceration, engaging
communities, aiding survivors, preventing crime, improving decision-making, advancing
fairness, and strengthening families. “Works to promote bail reform in number of ways.
We operate supervised release programs that provide pretrial supervision and voluntary
social services as an alternative to detention.” (Harkins, 2022, pg.1)
d.
Yes, the bail reform program is effective and has helped many communities become safer
and has achieved incredible results showing reduced levels of incarceration in many
communities.
e.
The way the program measures their effectiveness are by using the expert team into
researching methods to conduct evaluations of the individuals who are a part of the
program and being informed up to date of the jail population.
2.
What are your thoughts on both plea and bail reform?
My thoughts on plea reforms are the fact that there needs to be other ways to ensure
individuals who qualify for bail need to do alternative aid to make sure individuals do not return
to jail. According to the article
Cash bail reforms is not a threat to public safety
, it states, “In
jurisdiction where commonsense cash bail reforms have been implemented, those who await
their trial in the community are no more likely to be re-arrested after bail reform was passed than
before. Put simply, releasing more people has not led to higher crime rates.” (Preston, Eisenberg,
2022, pg.1).
I also believe that it is important for the justice system to base of the crime itself
2
and how the individual can rehabilitate other than placing a price on a crime and not knowing
how easy it is for individuals to pay. “In an overdue recognition that a person’s wealth should not
determine their liberty.” (Nyclu, 2023, pg.1). This explains the importance of bail itself because
it does not help individuals who are low income that committed a misdemeanor and have to
serve years in prison while other individuals with harsher crimes can pay off a bail because they
are able to provide the money.
