How does the tendency to push religion away from the public arena affect the
Christian’s ability to engage culture?

What are the areas within your own life that depict the sacred/secular divide?

How can the sacred/secular divide be eliminated within your sphere of influence?
The tendency to push religion away from the public arena can affect the Christian’s ability to
engage with culture because it can make some Christians feel intimidated when in a public
setting. In turn, it can cause people to believe they are hypocrites by leading two different lives:
one with Christ at the center and the other with Him in the background. When I was growing up,
many people in my youth program were leading two very different lives. When they were at
church, they would act like a picture-perfect Christian. While out in public or during school, they
would act completely differently.
One area in my life where I can see the divide is within my daily life. I have a lot of anxiety
when it comes to bringing religion into a conversation with someone who does not have the same
belief as me because I do not want it to be a detriment to our relationship. It is hard for me to
overcome anxiety to create a productive conversation.
One way the divide can be eliminated within my sphere of influence is by standing firm in my
belief. I can try to have those hard conversations with those around me while making them
productive.

Hello Joshua,
I agree with fear being the reason that religion is not talked about or shown in public. In my
experience when talking about religion with non Christians it feels like you are walking on
eggshells trying not to disrespect their religion. You can not force anyone to have the same belief
as you, so I think you need to be able to have the harder conversations while still making them
productive. If you are open to those conversations, you can come to a mutual understanding and
common ground.
I did not think about science when I thought about the sacred and secular divide. I have seen the
science aspect of how the earth came to be on many tv shows and movies lately. Many people
will believe scientists when it comes to things they do not understand or do not want to look up
themselves. Most people will believe what they think is the easiest to comprehend or deal with in
their mind and religion is something that you have to constantly focus and work on to continue to
develop your relationship.
When you are more willing to share your experiences with people, they are more willing to listen
and understand where your point of view is coming from.
