Trends in College Teaching: Journal Article Critique 1 Destiny Ward Liberty University
Abstract The term "trends in higher education" refers to the prevalent patterns or tendencies that students in Christian higher education institutions need to be aware of in order to appropriately anticipate their requirements and harmonize with the environment of the university.
Critical Analysis of an Article on Higher Education Trends In Christian higher education, the quest for God on campus closely resembles the quest on secular campuses in various aspects. Glanzer, Carpenter, and Lantiga (2010) discovered distinctive patterns that provide insight into the entire group and its relationship to broader trends in higher education (p. 721). The writers draw a comparison between Christian schools, which have a Christian perspective, and pluralist schools, which prioritize employment preparedness. Christian colleges were categorized under Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant denominations. Synopsis The authors conducted a survey of 579 universities that self-identified as Christian based on their publicly available mission or vision statements. The inquiries directed towards the universities pertained to the founding of the institution, religious association, language, academic disciplines, obligatory fields of study, and the impact of the Christian identity on the university's viewpoints and actions (Glanzer, Carpenter, and Lantiga, 2010, p. 735). The Literature Review includes numerous papers and books, but, they provide minimal or no useful information. Furthermore, the Literature Review states that the main objective of the present article is to establish a comprehensive collection of Christian higher education institutions located outside of the United States and Canada (p. 724). The document provides comprehensive definitions for the terms "Christian" and "College". A response rate of under 20% was achieved from the initial contact list. The distribution of religious denominations is mainly in line with expectations, with Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox faiths being the most prevalent. Among the Protestant denominations, 10 particular denominations have been identified, while the others are simply categorized as Protestant. In summary, regardless of whether the state provides financial

support to these newly established Christian colleges, they demonstrate a strong dedication to providing higher education that benefits the general public rather than solely focusing on private financial gain. The title "examining trends" suggests that trends will be analyzed and discussed. Moreover, even within the abstract, there is a reference to trends in relation to higher education. The text curiously lacks these parallels. Out of the total 34 pages in the article, around fifteen pages contain the main text, while the other pages consist of appendices that provide information about the schools and reference pages. Out of the total fifteen pages, the distribution is almost equal between the pages containing results and interpretations, and the ones containing literature review, definitions, methodology, and future study ideas. However, despite the seemingly equal distribution of textual information, there is a noticeable scarcity of practical and valuable knowledge concerning developments in higher education. Explicitly, the article does not include any arguments in favor of or against Christian higher education in comparison to other types of higher education. Discoveries The study aims to examine the relationship between areas of study in Christian higher education and areas of study in non-Christian higher education, as suggested by the introduction and abstract. The answer is not explicitly provided, but rather intricately intertwined within the data, necessitating a significant amount of effort to uncover. In pluralist schools, the primary focus is on equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in the job market, particularly in the fields of business and the sciences. Although this pattern is commonly observed at Christian institutions, there is a greater emphasis on the humanities as well as faith-based and service-oriented pursuits. The anticipated subject matter, as inferred from
the extensive introduction of commercial periodicals, regarding the exploration for the existence of God on college campuses, was not identified as a prevailing pattern in any of the educational institutions. After thoroughly reading the entire essay numerous times, the reader remains unaware of the genuine religious tendencies of students on any college campuses. The article conspicuously avoids discussing any religious services or customs at the schools, instead singling them out based on their assumed Christian perspective. In conclusion The article is underwhelming. The headline, "Looking for god in the university: examining trends in Christian higher education," initially captures attention, but the abstract fails to maintain interest due to the convoluted content of the study. There is a noticeable rise in the establishment of Christian universities in countries other than the United States and Canada, and privatization seems to be contributing to this trend. However, the topic of finding God is not revisited.
